For those dependent on AA or AAA batteries for lights etc Maplin have £6 off their 1.6v Nickle Zinc rechargeables and charger at £6.99 each

Don't claim to know too much about advanced battery tech Mike P, but I notice that those batteries are 1.6V. Don't a lot of lights mention some notional 1.2V rating? Also, how good is that charger? I bought a Maplin fast charger for Maplin NmH batteries and I fear that it ended up after a while frying the batteries because of the fast charging. I now have a more "advanced" gentler charger for my NmHs. I stress that I'm not criticising the Maplin NMh batteries nor the charger - fast charging by its very nature compromises batteries I think - I pretty much knew this when I bought charger and batteries - I was cautioned against it by a few wise forum souls.

The batteries and charger are BPI Branded rather than Maplins own. Theres no mention on the Cateye instructions of the set I have as a backup of a nominal voltage, I stressed the 1.6v as I am aware of some lights simply being too dim on 1.2v rechargeables.

Know what you mean about fast chargers, I use a BC700 for NiCad and NiMi batteries

Sometimes however it fails to detect a battery has been inserted so I pop that battery in a fast charger for a few minutes then back in the BC700 and it detects the battery.

This is probably a better NiZn charger but it is a good few ££ more

Maybe a niche bargain..
Kinesis gran Fondo titanium frameset for around £850 with additional discount. Limited sizes though (unfortunately not mine)

phew, that was close  I have a little spare cash this month & am thinking of a new winter/wet weather steed. Could have been tempted to overspend on that, but the 60cm is £1300, which is too far over budget to be tempted

I have the same bc700 charger as you, having learned the error of my ways, but i too sometimes have to use the maplin fast charger to give a battery a kick for a couple of minutes so that the bc700 will stop saying it is "null" all the best, thanks for the reply.
