But this is something they will encounter on their own if they pass their test. Better to improve their observational driving skills, rather than pass because of prior knowledge.

They will improve soon as they pass their test. Out on the road solo. I can't see any reason not to give a learner the best in depth training before taking a test.

Think of it like mock exams. Didn't you learn exam tactics/ keeping calm from those mocks tests?.

Just like learning to drive, practice run first.

You don’t see the exact questions in a mock exam!

I never drove around the test area prior to taking mine. You're either good enough or you're not, and if you're not then simply knowing the likely route won't save you.

I drove around the test area quite a lot, but then it was the natural area to use for the driving school I used.

No, but you see the questions from previous years, familiarise yourself with the likely topics and questions that will come up.
You can't go the *exact* route your driving test will take you on, but you can drive around the most likely roads and junctions so that you are familiar.
This also means that you are more relaxed and aware when taking your test, and less worried about where you are going.

At the moment, my daughters two biggest worries are meeting other cars when there is a car parked on the left / right hand side of the road and going left instead of right (she's dyslexic, so she finds left and right quite difficult).

Clearly a long way away from being a safe and competent driver at the moment. But she’ll get there.

Actually she's very level headed, safe and competent and is expected to pass her test. The directionality issue is now addressed in driving tests as the examiner can point along with saying left and right.

I can't be doing too much wrong with the metbod I have taught. None have had an accident or ticket, since passing their test. Latest success, she has 2 years blemish free driving record.

Only my youngest to get taught now
