On 8th August 1996 parts of Sheffiled saw 6 inches of "snow". It started out as a particularly heavy icy hailstorm and frozen rain and what was left may not technically have been snow but damn sure looked the part.

Why are you all so pessimistic about the weather? We have 3 weeks left of summer , then autumn comes along with nature dressing in beautiful colours. Winter is still a long way away and as for it being very cold and hard, we are told the same thing every year.
Look on the bright side, next summer is on its way and we will all be another year older.

I remember a good few years ago driving into Bishop Auckland to pick the wife up from work and a hailstorm had left a full cover of white all along the grass verges down Watling road (it must have instantly melted from the tarmac due to vehicle heat) ~ this was in June!

We had one of those earlier this year, not sure whether it was late june or early July. It stayed even on the tarmac on the housing estate roads for a good 10 minutes, and on the grass for half an hour or more.

As yes, Winter, that time of year when the rain and the drizzle becomes slightly less warm.

been eye-balling winter tires for the new-to-me car. I generally like to have them on for 2-3 months, maximum. found an ideal set of pre-owned, just contemplating pulling the trigger ... wondering if this past exceptionally wet Spring & Summer, foretells of a moisture rich Winter

Not a hint of autumn colour yet.
Yet the Beeb did something on christmas decorations this morning, and the local garden centre have got 25kg bags of rock salt piled high.

Someone's taking this 'Be prepared' lark too seriously

Quite a few apples on the roads from roadside trees, which seems a little earlier than usual, I think of that as a September thing.

I always used to put winters on, when we lived in the Brecon Beacons. But I've been using all-season tyres for the last few years, don't have quite as much space for storing a 2nd set, and they seem to cope pretty well with the small amount of snow we get down here in the Vale of Glamorgan.
