And every single one of them lives beyond a reasonable walking or cycling distance...?
Well! I blame previous governments for all the chaos !
Years ago the Nearly Earning Centre, also known as the Job Centre were forcing people to apply for jobs within an hour's travelling time ! In some big cities that could be down to a mile caught up in traffic. Here it could be as far as Oxford, 60 miles .
It was interesting listening to a chap this morning on Breakfast TV. He was saying that anyone wanting to become a HGV driver has to pay £7,000 yet the government are handing out millions in student loans, which not all of the money is paid back to send people to university .

As of yesterday, I expect.

This is a minor annoyance here as well: the Job Center considered a "reasonable" distance for a job suggestion to be up to 50km/30 miles. I pointed out several times that I lived just south of a very deep valley with no all-year usable cycleway and no direct bus service to the towns to the south, but to no avail; it's one reason I came here, at least there are cycleways and flat terrain.

Now I have clients who are expected to do the same, although in practice the staff are aware that this isn't always possible. On the other hand though, the reembursement for travel to our training seminars is limited to the cost of a regional railcard, which arguably contradicts the demand that you have a car, but in practice encourages people to drive through villages and narow roads instead of the Autobahn when they come to us, because then they drive shorter distances and save money...

When I worked, a bit of snow would see people phoning in en masse reporting their inability to get to work. Some of them lived as far away as 3 miles.

But we all know the score. Depemding on which station i was at my cycling commute was between 18 and 32 miles rpund trip, and quite often I'd cycle 30 miles or more at work. 60 miles or something fair enough, but people who live in the next town or two towns over have no excuse.

Tell me about it. I used to make it in 20 miles, half of which was on B roads which were barely treated. I would get in to find people a few miles away saying they couldn't get their cars out!

A friend had that. A colleague who lived next to them phoned the boss to claim the drifts were so bad they couldn’t make it. The boss handed the phone to my friend saying maybe they’d like to speak to their neighbour.

I've got the solution !
Instead of the Milk Race we have a Petrol Race! A tour of Britain with the riders carrying petrol or diesel in their drinks bottles. The routes will have to be decided upon where the shortages are. A whole race of riders should be able to get a Chelsea Tractor a few miles .

I fill our car when the gauge is at about 1/3 full. I've done this since getting a car as my then Father-in-law was a suicide risk and lived 1/4 of a tank away.
Thursday we had to go out for a medical appointment and on the way in I filled up as were at 1/3rd of a tank. No issues, no queues and then.....
The Beeb said that some BP garages were closed due to late delivery of fuel. At that time IIRC it was 15 garages, and then there were queues, people filling 10 extra fuel cans as well as filling up. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

"Isn't it amazing how in wartime conditions this country managed to lay a pipeline from the Isle of Wight to Normandy !
In peacetime with all modern technology we can do bu99er all! "

A solution . It may need quite a few to join all the forecourts up .
