I guess that it's lucky the roads are all paid for out of road tax rather than part of the council tax going to local Highways departments.

Oh... wait a minute...
Yeah, good point. I pay car tax on 3 vehicles. I understand only 1 fifth of that is actually spent on the roads, but that's not my fault. I'd imagine the other 4 fifths more than cancels out what the government hand back to the local authority for roads so I could therefore argue that it's my car tax that pays for the roads and not my council tax. In my head I'd much rather imagine my council tax pays for Tracy, Sharon, Debbie and Gumpta to crowd around Davina's desk to look at her holiday snaps that he took on a weeks sick leave to have that gender re-assignment operation.

What can I do about it ? The problem with the public sector is precisely that - there is no competition, no choice - we can't vote with our feet, hence expensive services, shite service.

If you think it was that badly handled (and my personal feeling from what you've said is that it wasn't) then contact your local Councillor - you put them in power after all, so they are in competition with prospective replacements, and they want you to be happy constituents. If you feel that the services are that are that bad, then chances are your neighbours do too - so talk to them, and get them to forward their comments on too.

If you don't think that the issue is that serious, most Council websites have a handy page where you can complain either online, or give you a number to phone to speak to someone directly. You can report that you felt you were dealt with rudely (give as much info as you can) and it will be fed back. The form might even be this one. No, Councils are not in direct competition with one another, but their performance is closely monitored and this sort of feedback is taken very seriously, especially if any of their services are outsourced.

Firefighters ? Oh I see. Come to think of it I did see a girl collecting money at a fire station as the firemen were washing cars for charity instead of manning the station. I assumed she would have been the cleaner or cook but she did have a uniform but she did look very large and a bit small and a bit unfit. Surely she wasn't a fireman.

Indeed. Its a little known fact that full time firefighters are paid only when there is an actual fire to attend to, and it is completely abhorrent that they should do anything constructive with any of their downtime. And to think there was an unfit woman working in the public sector. In full view too!

In the end I dealt with it by dragging my bin around half naked to get satisfaction. I do understand that the administration in my area is democratically elected but when i'd much rather have a direct competitor I could go to when it affects me directly. e.g. Labour have been running the show in Salford forever - they are useless but because the benefit cheating, uneducated masses of Salford like free handouts and services it will always be so. So my one vote, which wont necessarily change the quality of my customer experience with the bin service anyway, wont make a lot of difference. If there was a real alternative, only that would whip the poor service into shape because they would be unemployed if it didn't improve. In reality, although I understand and appreciate your comments, wouldn't be likely to change a single thing.

They take it in turns to be cook and driver. I used to go to see a mate at a local fire station and have a few pints in the private bar, but the driver couldnt have any that shift.
It's reassuring that at least the driver isn't half-cut when they all pile out... private bar????

When the fireman do a car wash around here it is in their time off, they do not get paid for it.

Come on guys it is only a Q7 nothing flash about that we can all have one.

Don't know if it's a different circus but it's the same clown.......I'm still paying £170 a month for the lazy bleeders not to empty it.
you've answered your own question by wallowing in your usual ignorance. Almost all council bin collections have been handed over to private enterprise

Last year when we had that little bit of snow all the binmen packed up and went home leaving us all with overflowing bins for a couple of weeks. I found it strange that all the courier lorries got round, as did the shop deliveries and the parcel force lorries but the bin men couldn't. Back in the '60's (when you could jack in a job in the morning and start somewhere else the same afternoon) I worked on the council for a while and when snow stopped normal work we were given shovels and sent out snow clearing.
