Some years ago I was camping with friends in the New Forest.
I was the first one up, so I made some coffee and took my fishing stool and perched myself on it in a clearing, a little distance from the tents to admire the low mist that had formed over the grassy area.
From behind me, I could hear the thunderous noise of galloping hooves, becoming louder and louder.
I stood up and faced the trees from where the noise was emanating.
Suddenly, from amidst the trees, charging straight for me, came between twenty or thirty New Forest ponies at full chat.
I froze, with my mug of coffee in my hand.
Petrified.
The ponies parted either side of me as they galloped past.
They came so close that I could feel the air which they disturbed as they whizzed past me at speed.
The whole experience probably didn't last more than five seconds - but it felt like months.
I was clenching for the nation during this time.
Once they had passed, I realised that one of my fellow campers had come out of her tent to see what the commotion was about.
'Did you see that?' I asked, in a shaky voice.
'I did' came the reply 'I thought you were going to be killed there'.
'Funnily enough, so did I' I replied.
This story is 100% true.
The next time we're in Whitstable, we can call on Julie who witnessed it, and ask her to corroborate it.

But I can't stop myself from adding that not one of those ponies stopped to apologise or to see if I was ok.

They're probably on an equine forum somewhere moaning about some tourists camping in their forest and how they've no right to be there.

Nor would I expect them to, that after all is what is supposed to set humans apart from the beasts. Which I suppose leads onto were these triathletes humans or beasts

Tell me about it, as a child if my mum heard a horse (Normally a Totter's cart) I'd be sent out on my bike with a bucket and dustpan on the handlebars with "Don't come back without any" ringing in my ears.

The triathlon rider has been identified and banned for life from any events with the same organiser.
My reaction to that is "Big deal!", I'd now like to see him prosecuted.

To be fair, the organiser couldn't have done more in respect of that triathlete. And he may be facing further problems down the line:

Triathlon officials said the "mishap" was a "police matter", adding a investigation was ongoing.

They can't name them as it is in the hands of the Police so it's up to them now. Once they're sentenced then hopefully they'll be 'named and shamed' and other clubs will blacklist them.
