Is that the super estelle? Me too. Auto mag once described the super estelle as the nearest thing to a 911. It was noisy, uncomfortable, handled badly and the engine was at the wrong end!
110R Coupe the Estelle replaced it when the front grille was added - think the radator was moved to the front then. My parents had the saloon version - Im sure you've heard the jokes about it, but then it did look ghastly. Odd how losing a couple of doors and having a fastback changes it completely.

I dunno, it had a certain charm!
Weren't they all derived from the Renault Dauphin?

Dunno about the Renault, the previous few years range were rear/rear drive too. Something Skoda (and Porsche) stuck with after everyone else had gone front/rear drive or FWD. After a quick google/wikipedia looks like the MB100 came between the Octavia and 110R. Quite pretty thing too

It's not a heavy car and the rear suspension becomes a bit bouncy when loaded which may not be the perfect characteristic of a tow car. The 1.5dci Renault engine is a known quantity and seems pretty tractable.

I used to drive a Renault Megane estate with a 1.5dci engine, it was entirely satisfactory, no gripes whatsoever.

I actually quite wanted one of these...

I'd like a Coupe, the 120

we had an early Octavia. people laughed. for a bit. but not for long.

might be worth having a look at them for the next divebus

I've got an '11' plate Octavia estate (1.6Tdi)
We bought it, when it was about 6 months old, with 7,000 miles showing, now it's knocking on the door of 90,000, & with no issues, just 'wear & tear' items replaced
A brilliant car, the best 'normal' car I've driven
I'd definitely buy another one, when the time comes (quite fancy the 4x4 derivative though)

I know a lad with an Octavia scout. Seems OK.

Right now there is nothing to suggest that the build quality is nothing less than very good. Some of the plastics are a bit basic but it's all well put together and finished.
I think it was the early ones built in India before they returned production to Romania. There were cases of serious rust on delivery (chassis, weld seams, inner wings) and people rejecting the cars after a couple of months left, right and centre. As I understand it, the problem was resolved with the move to Romania. I did a bit of checking, and I'm a bit concerned that the engines are a bit on the small side. The Mondy has a 2-litre turbodiesel which is a real slugger and copes fine with a small 'normal' caravan, and I am not sure I would want anything less powerful to replace it. I've driven many miles in a company Megane with the 1.5 Tdi and it was a great little car, but I'm not sure it would cope with pulling 1200 kg up a Welsh mountain.

I always dismissed Dacia as a truly horrible car maker (in a mental bracket with Moskvitch and FSO) in the old days, but when I heard that the modern ones were 'no frills' and actually quite decent cars my ears pricked up. And of course Dacia is the Roman name for Romania, so they have classical cred as well. Jury's out, but Dacia is now on the 'further consideration' list.

ours was a 51 plate . when we pxed it for the Volvo it had 115K on the clock , engine was running sweet as just broken in , but gearbox bearing on 1st was a bit rattly . we had it all over the country with salty wet dive kit and not a sign of rust. the drivers seat squab was non existent through wear of getting in and out and had i wanted to spend a grand i could have sorted both issues. but it was time for a change.
