A nice 5x9min at FTP for me this evening whilst watching Flanders.

I was visiting an old uni friend this weekend and felt quite guilty after lots of beer, pizza, poor sleep and no exercise so it was nice to be back on it.

Probably another session tomorrow then a commute on Wednesday 🙂

Nice.

I'm off to Calpe in 2 weeks time. My Coach has suggested a 20 hour week with no specific planned efforts - the hills will take care of that. Outline plan is 3hrs, 5 hrs, 1.5hrs cafe ride, 3hrs, 5hrs, 2.5hrs.

I aim for a hard week this week (630TSS) then an easier week (420TSS) before Calpe - and an easy week when I get back.

Are you doing organised rides Martin or will you be free to pick your own route each day? I did a week near Calpe back in 2015 - I was based in a small town called Callosa d’en saria. Coll dels Rates on the doorstop as was Guadalest.

I smashed my 2023 5 min power best, going from 291W to 362W.

Nice gains there 😎

I've not ridden outdoors since last autumn, except with the kids. Only in high summer can I really get out for a couple of hours in the evenings, unless I leave Jo with both the boys, which doesn't seem too fair. Fortunately, we've got great countryside on our doorstep so I don't have to 'waste' my cycling time riding out through suburbia or boring flatlands whenever I do get out.

i think I’m the polar opposite. I live in central London so I do either have to cycle out of town to find countryside. Or ride the very flat Regent’s Park. I don’t find either a waste of time though to be honest. In fact I get quite different things from both. I’d definitely prefer both to the turbo for anything longer than an hour.

I’m also very lucky my missus has her own interests so it means she’s often seeing friends or doing an evening class etc. it just makes the balance of me doing bike rides seem fairer I guess. I’ve always made a point of cycling being my lowest priority. The missus knowing that also helps massively to avoid resentment I think. She’s literally seen me cancel rides at the last minute if something else comes up and I think this give and take really helps her to encourage me to make time for it when I can.

Having said that if I am going to up my weekly quota it’ll mean cycling earlier in the morning rather than evening to keep the family balance right.

Wow, 14 hrs is quite a target. My max this year is about 11hrs and I don't have a job to contend with.

If I can bolt 30 mins onto my morning commute every day that’s 7.5 hours just commuting each week. 2 hours on a Tuesday for warm up and then race and warm down. Then a climb or race on Thursdays is potentially another 1:30. So then with a Sunday ride on top it’s really quite doable IF the weather stays fair.

That is until life gets in the way as it invariably does of course!

It was a glorious day today. Thankfully for a change given the weather I spent most of it outdoors on a site visit 🌞

I was half inclined to test my new fan but having been outside walking most of the day, I was more inclined to take the endurance/recovery workout outside which I did.

Albeit low power I felt I hit the target not too bad apart from the occasional free wheel downhill.

I think I also timed it right to make use of the last of the warm sunshine.

Been commuting by bike last 3 days which makes a nice change.
In other news thought I would add planks to my daily routine. Jesus. I know my core is shot what with the hernia and sepsis but I couldn’t hold a plank for 30s mainly because I couldn’t keep the core tense AND breathe!

I need to do more upper body strength work. But it’s not a natural thing for me to do.

Failed my indoor workout miserably today..

It was a combination of 4x 30sec @160% with 30 sec recoveries and 3 x 3 mins @120% with 3 mins recoveries.

The repeated nature of the workout killed me off.

Hopefully over time, I'll do better each attempt until I nail it.

Talk about the kids of death! I should have known better really.

Since I made this bold declaration I’ve managed about 10 miles total this week…

I managed to twist my knee a bit lifting some gear up a flight of stairs and it’s been tender to the point where I don’t want to make it anymore angry. Hopefully some rest over the weekend and I’m back on the game.

It goes without saying it will get easier with consistency. YouTubing yoga core exercise routines might be a gentle intro. Although the term ‘gentle’ is often relative!
