To be honest my main problem with training plans is mine, and others, inability to realistically stick at them. That is why I preach that the journey is just as important as the overall goal. Because if you’re not enjoying the journey, then you’ll never see the goal achieved.

I do actually have my own set of criteria that I try and stick to in terms of variation in my riding.

On a side note in my opinion even amongst races there’s a massive variation in what you get out of them. Ie short term ‘glory’ verses long term gain. I’d suggest people that have continually tried to push variety have seen a bigger pay off over the last few years vs people who stuck to one type of race. I referenced Alan in my previous post because he races but also does at least one longer endurance ride a week. For me that type of balance is more likely sustainable than focusing on one thing alone.

But in the end to go full circle, it is better to do what you enjoy rather than nothing at all. Unless that is you enjoy doing nothing of course!

Yeah, but you and I know that when you come up with a plan you tend to stick to it, probably because it’s your plan. Others aren’t so difficult, sorry, strong willed , and need the benefit of structure. Then they have to know what they want the training for and need to know what should work.

I have done a few especially after my knee op, and so I think I know what works and so I can dip into structured workouts , outside rides and possibly even the odd race as part of my own plan. If it works I will sell Ito this in C 😁 If not, well you’ll have to send the van back to pick me up in the Pyrenees 😁

😅

Definitely wasn’t a dig at your strategy mate. Just a round about way of saying do what works for you. In fact I think we’re on the same page really. We’ve both sort of cobbled together what we think will work for us but also what we think we can realistically remain motivated for whilst doing it.

The plan was 2.5 hrs Z2 outside or 1.5hrs indoor. In the end I joined the Tour of Watopia which was 70kms and managed my self restraint and stayed in Z2. I did 2hrs 23 mins which surprised me and I wasn't bored.

Back to the 5 x 5 mins at 110% tomorrow.

The weather was good yesterday so I took my workout outside - which has the disadvantage of using my outside FTP which is harder.

However, I managed the 6 x 4:30 @ 110% with 4:30 recoveries. I also threw in a cheeky 35 sec effort near the end to fill an annoying dip in my 2023 Power Curve

Last ZRL (final ) on Tuesday then far more Z2 .

I found 3 hours a week or so ago fine, so will try and repeat this and increase sessions to 3 per week and one race event dropped in
