Meh, I'm not one to care what other people think. I'll do what I like.

Never seen a post yet from a rider who didnt wear a helmet, boasting about how much less damage he suffered to his head by not wearing one.

Until they start appearing en masse, I would rather keep a lid on that thin bit of skin between the road and my noggin.

I guess all of these wannabee heroes dont wear padding in their shorts either

52, never hit my head yet, lots of v.e.r.y near misses though.......where the wearing of a helmet night well have "provided" impact. No thanks.

It is just as hard to prove not wearing a helmet saved injury as it is to prove wearing one 'saved your life'. So as the pro helmet people rely mostly on anecdote I can report in that in the 50 odd years of riding off and on I have come off a number of times and have never hit my head so helmets are a waste of time YMMV.

Are pedestrians who don't wear helmets also "wannabee heroes"?

After all there are no claims from from the pedestrians who didnt wear a helmet, boasting about how much less damage they suffered to their head by not wearing one.

Interesting article, I wear a helmet 80-90% of the time. If it's a REALLY hot day I might not bother, depends where I ride really.

Just how much time is being wasted?

I probably spend 30 seconds per week putting my helmet on.

OK then, here's one. I fell off (knocked off actually) and landed on my shoulder. My head missed the ground by not very much. If I'd been wearing a helmet I would very likely have hit my head !
Would it then have "saved my life" perchance?

By the way, I'm not making this up

A driver once passed me quite close. If I'd have had a helmet on he'd have passed me so close he'd have hit me, so not wearing a helmet saved my life.

Also, if I had to wear a helmet, I wouldn't ride a bike and would no doubt ie young as a result of a sedentary lifestyle illness, so not wearing a helmet has already saved my life twice, that's before I talk about the horrible c spine injuries I haven't sustained because I don't wear a helmet.

A thread like this always degenerates into people slagging off each other's choice to wear/not to wear a helmet

If you want to then do conversely if you don't then don't !!!!

Fixed wheel fanatic.
I was a member of MAG (motorcycle action group) for many years and they are the biggest proponents of removing the law on the wearing of motorcycle helmets. My memory is a bit sketchy but IIRC over something like 40mph helmets can cause as many injuries as they stop, with their extra weight they can effectively break your neck and let's be honest if you crash at over 40mph a bang on the head is the least of your worries.
The motorcycle laws came in on the back of the rising disdain of motorcyclists of the day, leatherboys/hells angels etc - I doubt the law would happen today.
I'd ride my motorbike without a helmet, though not far or particularly fast.

The strange thing is I always wear a helmet on my 'pedal' bike.
When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, of course I never wore a helmet, when I returned to cycling it was mountain biking, so I always wore a helmet. When I eventually returned to riding on the road I just continued riding with a helmet. It feels odd to ride without a helmet now.

I've had one big off on my bike. It was a bad one, breaking my collar bone, I distinctly remember banging my head on the floor. If I hadn't been wearing my helmet I'd have had a bump on my head, no doubt. Last year I passed out, causing me to fall out of a car. I banged my head on the floor and had a big lump and bruise.
Make of that what you want.

What worries me and probably makes me wear one more than the correctly or incorrectly perceived danger, is that if someone knocks you off, in the eyes of the law you are as much to blame for not wearing a helmet as the numpty that knocks you off.

No they don't. Read them properly and you will see that the slagging off of choice comes from pro helmeters.
I disagree when you read some of the above, each side of the issue pour scorn on each other's point of view.....in my opinion of course

Note to self....never, ever post in helmet threads!

Urban myth. A good helmet and good leathers are the bikers best friends.

Not true, only if you crash. I stopped wearing full full leathers to stop crashing as I realised they were the cause. If it was warm enough I'd wear shorts and flip flops (like I do in Spain, where the m/bike police wear polo shirts) and not expect to crash again.
