When I first saw this I thought "so what, you'll still be able to ride it just without the electric assistance", but now it seems like you can't even use it without it being hooked up to a computer, is that right? Because that's nuts if so!

I'd never buy an electric bike like that either, mine is entirely controlled from its own computer on the bike. Too many things rely on apps to operate rather than providing an actual interface.

Absolutely. While no fan of ebikes personally, I can appreciate their benefits for some and ultimately if they get more people out of cars, that has to be a win. All this needless integration of tech though; the mind boggles. I "work" in tech and it's shocking to see how soon / readily stuff gets written off through obsolescence or lack of support.

We're writing off clients' machines (as they no longer meet security standards) that are of comparable age to my Fuji; which I consider "young" and fully expect to ride until the day I can ride no more..

100% a world I have no desire to be part of.

I rode it a short distance but it seems to be stuck in turbo mode so 25 kph if my legs are even vaguely moving. Also no indication of the remaining range which will be reduced in that mode.

Seriously? That's also bonkers.

I mean in both cases fair enough if it doesn't connect to a GPS or telemetry or whatever but for it to be totally unusable? Wow.

I fully agree. I can't for the life of me see the purpose of an app and regular updates for electric vehicles. You make them and they either go or they don't. The thought of being in lane three of a motorway when the internet connection goes or someone hacks the app is chilling.

And as for a bike needing one, madness in the extreme.

I don't understand why something as simple as an Ebike should need an app or an update.
There's a battery,a motor and a controller to regulate it's speed.
It's simply a giant scalextrics car in all honesty

It was the display unit. It’s been replaced by the dealership and the software upgraded. At least I know it’s not something I should have been able to fix myself.
