The aussies have lost control here ("clap clap clap" for ZC's ton ) Eng are scoring at 7.5 an over since lunch, and Cummins cant keep bowling himself and Starc.

@nickyboy I expect Stokes to go the aggressive route and declare tonight, as best bowling conditions will be tomorrow morning.

Could be a good shout, which I hadn't previously thought of.

If Stokes does declare, hopefully this time there won't be so much fuss made over it.

I suppose even the blue blazers would allow an England captain to declare a first innings when batting second in the match.

Morning session
Aus 18 -2 in 7.2 overs
England 61-1 in 16 (3.8 rpo)

Afternoon
Eng 178-1 in 25 (7.1 rpo)
an absolute belter of a session

Evening?
expect around 33-35 overs to add to their 239-2

edit to add...
definitely lost its shine and hardness!

Good effort from England thus far.

The problem is that Saturday looks like it will be a washout and there is a possibility of a bit of play Sunday but not much. So for England to win the Test they need to score 500, which they could do by lunch on Friday if the bat really well, then look to either bowl out or almost bowl out Australia before close on Friday

Surprised you can get 6/4 on the Draw
Even Friday doesn't look rain free
We need to get a big first innings lead by end of play today and then try to bowl them out cheaply

Will he declare tonight?

I hope not.

Whilst I thought he might, the ball to root kept very low and then one climbed at Stokes, so if the pitch is starting to misbehave, he might think batting just once is best, so pile on some runs this morning and bowl at the Aussies after lunch.

Yes, Crawley mentioned batting once in his post match interview. I’d also have expected Stokes and Brook to have hit the Bazball button in the last 40 mins if a declaration was the plan. But this is a defensive Jumbo Visma like Australia who will shut up shop at the first opportunity. Lots of rain this morning, hope it will clear. Could be set up for Anderson in the gloom.

I would love Jimmy to get some wickets to sign off with. He's never had a fivefer in an old Trafford test.

Tongue or Potts must be in contention to replace him for the Oval (or Robinson if fit again).

I aslo thought it was odd Jim Maxwell said Crawleys inning was one of the best Ashes innings he'd seen. Exciting yes, but he played about 7 "Crawley cuts" before he finally chopped on.

Botham in 1981 at Headingley and KP at Oval in 2005 were far superior IMHO.

I was surprised at Maxwells comments. Yes Crawley changed the game but he had a lot of luck. Botham 81, KP 2005 and Stokes 2019 were all much better judged shows of aggression. Curiously I can’t remember any Australians…
