county championship - short term deals. is it me or are there so many more this season. i guess with more intl cricket, getting an overseas player for the whole season is long gone.

Looking at my county, Yorks.

today we line up with 3 players not there at start of season...

Ryan Rickleton has come in this week as Shad Masood has been recalled by Pakistan,

Dan Moriarty was signed the other month, which in turn led to Dom Bess being loaned to Warks for 2 games match, and in turn loaned to Somerset for rest of season

Mark Steketee also signed on a short term deal debuted last month

No it's way things go now no soon do they get settled in they are off no the next plane home. Costly quick fix with no one winning except the bank balance.
Yorkshire loaning players out is another story once it was too many class players for placers now it's players not being managed by poor coaching staff. Or they can't wait to get out door , the dressing room not exactly a happy place to be.

yes utter Rubbish from Root, Averaging just over 46 with a ton in the 1st test...

2nd higher series batting avee behind Stokes and 3rd highest runs scored behind Stokes & Duckett (just)

Fair play, you can't argue with the stats.
Look at his last four innings though? Quite un-Root like for me, added to his fielding woes.
Maybe it just points to the quality of the Aus bowling, Cummins has had him a few times now?

I really enjoyed listening to the 3rd Ashes Test on radio. For curiosity, I looked up on the web how much the cheapest ticket costs to watch the 4th Test at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in 10 days time. I was absolutely gobsmacked to find that the cheapest ticket is £159 per person per day! Way way beyond my budget. That equates to total takings of £39.75 million assuming a capacity crowd (probably will be) over each of the 5 days based on just the 'cheapest' ticket price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hadn't realised English cricket was so awash with money and that figure doesn't include the income from the other 4 Ashes Tests plus the Sky TV coverage money or the income from shirt sponsors etc.
Prices are expensive but do vary quite a lot. We paid £50 each at Headingley whereas the guy in front had £100 tickets. Different parts of the ground are at different rates. It was completely sold out and the touts outside were buying not selling. The son has paid £80 for Old Trafford which is a lot. Lords is often cheaper than that unless you go for the fancier areas. The best value tickets were at the MCG in Melbourne whee the 100,000 capacity keeps supply well ahead of demand.

Y.C.C. sell a ticket to get priority for tickets next year. £35. This is meta-ticketing.
Supply and demand.
The market.
Etcetera.
Personally, being unable to afford these ticket prices, I miss being able to see a test match at the ground. Has the test match atmosphere changed in the ground I wonder, now that the Barmy Army hold sway?

I think that comment is a bit out of date, a lot of the old guard went in the wake of the scandal i.e. Ballance, Gale etc or had already retired or moved on.
They are short of experienced batters given Malan, Brook, JB and Root are rarely available, but rebuilding around a decent set of youngsters a few old stagers like Adam Lyth and Tattersall. If they can keep them fit Coad & Fisher backed up by Revis, Thompson etc are a potent pace attack. Been a bit unlucky so far this season, with promising positions not quite converted into wins in the CC.

Your right it's not going the easy rebuilding a side and a start has been made. But the coaching set up it way off the mark at present.
As for my current view of inside i'm gong what I know from someone within it.

They do vary! Only been to one Test Match - India at Lords 2021. I've just checked, we paid £165/seat about 10 rows back, non-fancy area [can't remember the details of what price scheme there was, but I suspect there were cheaper tickets with restricted view, much further back?].

That's a lorra money ... but not when compared to similar top-level sport, and you get a whole day's entertainment, can wander round the ground, watch nets practice etc etc. Could be worse!

Only seen a test at Headingly. Think it was about £60 each, which for an Ashes game seems pretty reasonable. Joffrey Archer ripped them apart which was fun to watch. Shame we over bowled and broke him.

Been to Chester le Street a few times for county and T20 games. Great atmosphere.

I’ve been going to a day at a test match most days since the 80s, usually Leeds, Old T or Lords. Headingley had become unpleasant and at times it felt like you were in someone else’s stag do. It seems to have improved since about 2019 and this year was great. We were in the alcohol free stand, you could still use the bars but it wasn’t all day drinking and the atmosphere was so much better. Those that wanted to party all day in the western terrace could without spoiling it for others. It’s never been aggressive and we had some great banter with visiting Aussies.

Tense in the England - Australia womens' ODI. 229 - 7 chasing 263. Needing just over 4 an over but it needs Heather Knight to play a Stokesian innings to protect the tail.

and she did!

If ben stokes / baz decide to look past Jonny B, they could do worse than having a look at Somerset Youngster James Rew. currently leading run scorer in red ball cricket, 5 tons incl a double ton in current match... only made his debut last season when he prised the gloves off Davies. and just 19 years old!

I see that they're trying to launch cricket in the US (again):

With only two venues I can't see how this is going to work, but there's some serious financial backing there. And I suppose they've been sensible and gone with the shortest format of the game. I always enjoyed trying to explain Test cricket to my American pals. The concept of a draw, especially after 5 days play, is totally alien to them in sport!

Players are happy to and except to be allowed to move around and play for the biggest pockets.
With enough of an entertainment value it stands a chance of working.

Fully accept that, but they're already getting the excuses in that they're not "IPL lite", which it's pretty clear it already is.

Will it get an audience? Probably, albeit a very limited one I think.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but I just can't see it taking off. Although historically it was the most popular sport in the country. If they played that angle then maybe?

And all this is before you take into account the massive following of varsity sport.
