It's a bit flakey to make insinuations at this stage ... I'll keep an open mind until MCC investigation plays out, but I'm noting that Khawaja has had a fair few on-field "interactions", and Warner will have a row with anyone at any time.
You said it

Not a big cricket fan but as a kid I suffered, i mean watched a lot over school holidays when my grandad visited. A few ashes and west Indies when they were at the top I think. I never got this idea that cricket was a game with a higher spirit of fair play. You can probably go a lot further back than Shane Warne for that to be dispelled. Was the bodyline series even the first of the questionable spirit of fair play?

Anyway reading up on this incident I think Bairstow was a little bit lacking in awareness. They're professional cricketers. Imho they should know the letter of the laws. Besides I believe there was an attempt at catching an aussie out this way by england already this series, was it first test? I can't remember where I read that now.

If they don't know he rules how can they take advantage of them to win?

Not necessarily younger generation.

Well, no. It's a weird term that generally seems to have cropped up to appease old duffers who think they had it better in their day or something.

Anyway, having reflected on the Bairstow dismissal, aye he was a bit daft, but it's something he's tried before too so, I dunno. It's like that stumping thing you can do when the non striker is walking down.

Legal, but a total dick move.

This is a daft statement. Outside of the Umpires, 99% of players don't know much detail. You'll find the same in every professional sport. Watch the coverage of a handball or offside decision in football. In reality, I'm happy with "my" team not knowing every letter (although I admit it can be helpful!).

But this is by-the-by; if you read the rules Laws, you will see that this situation is governed by the opinion of the people on the pitch!

And while I'm here; almost every opinion I read in favour of the Aussie interpretation of the Starc/Bristow incidents includes a
"Yeah but whatabout ... ?" clause. Decisions shouldn't be made like that! If you can only defend your side's cheating with playground logic - SIR! He did it first! - then you are not on firm ground. Sorry :P

Is bowling underarm still allowed ?

Yes! But if you spend 2 seconds googling it, you'll see it's no longer very useful as a cunning tactic. HTH!

I don't have to defend it, the guy paid to decide this made the decision based on the rules. It's others who are kind of playing the rules or laws or whatever you want to call them don't matter as much as some mythical spirit of cricket.

As to professionals not knowing the rules, well you do see players making appeals based on rules. Some are quite knowledgeable about them too. Of course I don't know as much as you guys but how many have been caught out by leaving the crease before the ball is dead? It seems to me others haven't really made that mistake or certainly not often.

I am quite sure that huge numbers have done it, but not been "caught out" because their opponents wouldn't even think of it.

Most people would have considered the ball to be dead in that situation, due to rule 20.1.1.1 saying it is dead when:
20.1.1.1 it is finally settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or of the bowler.

But 20.2 says:
20.2 Ball finally settled

Whether the ball is finally settled or not is a matter for the umpire alone to decide.

In general, once the ball is in the wicketkeepers hands and the batsman is still in his crease, most players will consider the ball to be dead.

The Aussie newspapers are trying some virtue-signalling claptrap to reclaim the moral high ground. Making out that their PAKISTANI-BORN player was singled out for abuse.

But there is not a single sniff of it being racial in nature:

"While it is unclear from the video what was said to Khawaja, who is of Pakistani heritage, it was enough to have him stop and ensure an official took the member’s name. Sources close to the England Cricket Board, speaking on condition of anonymity because the process is ongoing, deny that the investigations under way by the Marylebone Cricket Club relate to racial abuse. The MCC has been contacted for comment."

EDIT: they're obsessed with this! Published at least 3 different columns/articles saying the same thing :P
