Aha! Just realised the ride doesn't start from Hebden Bridge (which has a direct train service to Leeds). If I go then sharing transport would be a good idea.

By the way, do you intend to do this ride on fixed.Last I heard your multi-gear refurbishment had stagnated, and you were happy to ride fixed everywhere

Might do it fixed if we go from Whalley. Not sure about fixed all the way from Hebden Bridge. If I can finally shake off a throat and chest infection I have and do some miles then I would be OK.
The refurbishment is not exactly going full speed, that is to say it's in the same state as it has been for the past 18 months. So I may have no other option.

It took me two years to totally strip, repaint, reassemble, although I got through a few tubes of metal polish in that time and spent far too long sourcing parts off ebay. When the bike is in as many bits as is possible, I find the motivation drains away, as the effort required to make it rideable is so large. I found I had to start setting myself targets for getting various jobs done. All finished now, next job is the MTB.

Well, I went out today and rode to Spring Wood to buy an ice cream! I felt ok on the way out but got tired on the way back. Considering that I haven't touched my bike since mid-December, and the furthest I had ridden since July 2012 was 31 miles, today's 43 mile total was a good start! There is just the small matter of the extra 103 km loop to get fit for now ...

(I'll write a longer post in the 'Your Ride Today' thread when I have time. Tonight is Chinese takeaway and The Bridge (season II) night!)

Hi ColinJ

We now have to be in Oldham in the evening and will very likely have to go via HB to collect my Brother-in-law so if you feel like you want to cycle from HB , but can't make your way back we may be able to assist with a lift back - our bike rack takes 3 bikes (4 if needed). (Just found it is my in-laws golden wedding anniversary that day and they are celebrating it. We have just received the summons by telephone call!).. gives you another option if you need it, but it sounds like you are well on the road to making a 100 miler...

That's what I looked like when I first started my undergrad course, I used to take everything and shower when I got there including spare going home cycling clothes and had a bright orange carradice cape.

So with my Brompton touring pannier full to the top with my carradice Cape my silhouette wasn't too far from that.. how things change with time - now I'm on my post grad I don't care if my merino smells like a wet dog...

I forgot to mention that I was checking the timing on the ride out to Spring Wood - I rode at a steady pace and got to the Manchester Road lights after 1 hr 5 mins, Rose Grove after 1 hr 10 mins, and the Padiham end of the Greenway after 1 hr 15 mins. It took me another 25 minutes to make my way round to Spring Wood via the Old Roman Rd. So, anybody wanting to meet up between HB and Padiham (e.g. @bromptonfb) should bear those numbers in mind and add them to the 08:00 start from HB.

Thanks - that's a nice offer. I still hope to be able to build up my stamina enough by the time of the ride, but other options are always handy!

There is a turn off the Greenway beside Padiham Leisure Centre onto Park Rd. Turn right to go past the centre and follow Station Rd to the A671 in Padiham. Turn left and climb up to the mini-roundabout. Turn right there and climb up Moor Lane which becomes Slade Lane at the top. Turn right onto the A6068 and almost immediately left off that onto the continuation of the old Slade Lane which becomes Sabden Road. Proceed along that and continue along Whins Lane, ignoring the R turn for Sabden. (Whins Lane is signposted as an alternative route for HGVs to Sabden.) Eventually, straight on at the crossroads. There are various side roads after that but Whins Lane is the one to stay on. Continue at the sign saying Whalley 3 miles. Eventually, the road turns to the right and climbs to a junction of Back Lane and the Old Roman Rd. Bear left on the old Roman Rd, signed Whalley 2 miles. Soon you will see a 20% descent sign on your left - take heed! Plunge down the s-bends to the bridge over Sabden Brook and try to maintain enough speed to get you halfway up the more gentle rise in the road on the other side. Go straight on at the junction with Sabden Rd. [NB If you do this ride in the opposite direction it is very easy to accidentally miss the Old Roman Rd and follow Sabden Rd all the way round to Sabden!] Climb to the top of the hill where Sabden Rd becomes Portfield Lane, bear left and start descending, bearing right on the same road down to the A671. Spring Wood is about 100 metres to your right by the traffic lights. Either cross to the other side of the road and turn right at the lights into Spring Wood car park, or (what I sometimes do) to avoid crossing the traffic flow - nip along the short stretch of footpath. There is usually an ice cream seller at the entrance to the car park. A visitor centre and toilet block is to the left as you enter the car park.

PS If anybody reading this has a GPS and would like a GPX file showing this part of my route - see below!

ColinJ looks a great ride and the Trough is a favourite so please pencil me in and I will confirm nearer the time. Might do an alternative first section from North Manchester otherwise its going to be a bit long with the too/from Hebden.

Thanks Colin that is the way I go too but wasn't sure where you got off the greenway as I have come off about 4 different places so far and wasn't sure of the most direct place. I am glad I am not the only one who has missed the old roman road on return leg as every time I have done it I end up in sabden and have to climb over Pendle hill. Went over on Sunday and went through bashall and round to whitewell and returned via sabden (by mistake again) just need to get my mileage up before march max distance so was was only about 45 miles.

I have added a GPX file for the section Manchester Rd Burnley/Padiham Greenway/Old Roman Rd/Spring Wood to the first post in the thread.

I would like as many riders as possible to have the route loaded to GPS devices

Make sure that you check that the files work properly on your device before the actual ride! (You might need to make your own copy of the route using whatever software you normally use.) I know people sometimes have problems with my GPX files!

If you do not have a GPS, make sure you choose somebody who is riding at your pace and arrange to stick with them!

Going to have to try and swap a day off at work, it sounds like it will be an epic ride if everyone turns up, setting off from home would turn it into a 220km extravaganza :bicycle::surrender:
