It’s a very niche reference.
I pride myself on pointless knowledge but that one passed me by.
And I suspect most other people are unaware of the song from 84 years ago!

I don't know how it got into my head, but it's been there since I was very young. Possibly my mother might have sung it.

I'd guess that an ancient Roy Rogers song might be better known in the US, which was probably the target for this funny.

Ive been racking my brains for where I had heard that song, and I remembered! Its sung by Jon Voight in the film 'Midnight Cowboy' though sadly is not on the OST I've got. It possibly appears near the start of the film when he's packing for New York, I couldn't find his version anywhere to share though I think I'll watch the film again now

In hindsight even obvious ones like “living on a prayer / chicken on a bear” are only funny if you get the 1980s song reference.

But as a 48 year old, I claim ignorance of that song.

"Get along little doggy" is the cowboy way of saying politely "move along" or "hurry up". Which is what his boss would have told him to do.

My daughter followed an on line tutorial which wasn’t far off that.
And did anyone ever try to do one of those forest in the snow pictures that Boss Ross would knock out in 10minutes. It turns out that you actually have to have some artistic talent.
