36 = b + d

36 = d + 24 + d

36 = 2d + 24

36 - 24 = 2d

12 = 2d

duck = 6, barrel = 30

Solution by substitution. Could be more elegantly composed

b = d + 24
b = 36 - d
36 - d = 24 + d
36 - 24 = 2d
12 = 2d

ergo d = 6

All the question asked was the height of the duck.

ergo d = 6

All the question asked was the height of the duck.

Solved using five steps instead of six!
