I am having problems with the rear brake as well. I can get it set up quite well, adjustment wise, i just cant get the lever to return to its normal position properly. It feels quite sloppy as though there isnt any tension there. The front is great and snaps right back. Is there a tension spring or anything on thec aliper that can be adjusted to return the lever, and so the moving caliper back to its home position?

I had exactly the same, if you squeeze the secondary brake levers on the top does it snap back? I had a kink in my brake cable where the secondary levers is. Basically, where the cable end from the drop handles enters into the secondary brake levers wasn't seated in the rubber grommet properly causing it to kink when i pulled on the top brakes hard. First try to re-lube the cable, you'll need to release it from the anchor bolt on the caliper, carefully remove the cable end so you can use it again. pull the cable out from the outer all the way to the secondary brake lever, lube the cable and rethread everything back. Mine was too badly kinked so I had to replace the whole brake cable. I have ordered a BB7 now, the rear caliper has completely failed, either the spring end keeps coming off from the seating notch, or the ball bearing ramps has worn to a state where the bearings slips when the brakes are applied hard, possibly the bearings itself may have worn.

Given the reliability on the front caliper I can only think that the caliper has failed due to excess wear through the grit and grime picked up as it it mounted on the chain stay, I do grab the rear brakes more than the front, as such I've almost burned through another set of pads on the rear- my second in 4 months.

aha at least it isnt just mine. Ill do what you suggest tomorrow, many thanks. i also notice that the part that the cable pulls on the caliper, to move the brake pad, can foul on the actual caliper body if not adjusted quite regularly. Can home today from a ride and noticed that the rear brake was worse than usual and this was why. Bad design fault if you ask me. Shame really, as the front works really well.

Is it just a rear caliper body BB7 you have ordered or have you gone for the whole lot, levers and all?

Going to get one caliper and rotor for the time being, really wanted the newer TRP Spyre dual piston design - which makes it effectively a static centering caliper which can be adjust by inline cable adjusters. Since both this and the shimano slim line calipers have been subject to recall recently- decided to go with the heavier but proven BB7, otherwise i'm left without a working bike in the next few weeks.

Just thought i would chime in on this one.. I purchased a cx comp from hallyfords the other week for commuting both on and off road. And my god, I never realised how much effort i was putting into keeping my mtb going on the road !
As of yet, I've not have any issues with the brakes/gearing.. So far.. If i do have any issues I will update with what they are..
The only issue really has been when replacing the front wheel after transport, its a pita to get the caliper aligned with the disk to slot in.. aside from that, all going well so far !

Alright, up-date for all those who have had troubles with Tektro Lyra mechanical disc brakes, and for future reference. At some point last week my rear caliper 'failed' on me, on applying the brakes strongly the brakes engages (usually pulling the torque arm on the caliper completely back) , sometimes without warning releases with a snap/click sound. Other times the brake engages and the brake torque arm doesn't release properly and pads stick rubs on the rotors- if this happens best to check cable tension/slack and cable end on the lever side is seated properly before going through the below.

The cause seems to be worn ball bearing ramp or catching bearings, after disassembling the caliper giving it a good clean and re-greasing the internals - the caliper seems to be back to normal.

To reduce over pulling the torque arm, I'm going to put a worn pad as a spacer on the inboard side so that the rotor can sit nearer the outboard side like on a BB7, this should reduce the amount of pull required to get a good brake response from the outer pad. So will give these one last try before fitting the BB7, though the pads have worn out extremely quick on the orignal tektro offerings

TRP only recalled Spyre series brakes that were sold between between April and December 6 2013, so anything you buy now will not be recalled.

They only had one incident of the fault happening but did a full recall anyway, that's the type of safety-conscious company I'd like to own brakes from!

Fair comment, though most places are out of stock and it is unclear to me as a consumer whether these stockist are still holding the affected brakes. Much to applaud for their cautiousness, though more can be done like Shimano who issued a clear note about their CX-75 brakes- a) giving the revised caliper a new model name CX-77 and b) putting in a key distinguishing feature (a white circle) on the hub of the torque arm.

Hi Gregcycle,

Thanks for your comments, to update, Halfords resolved the problem and no major problems to report on the new bike. I built again my self greasing everything except BB again. Only difficult bit was setting up lyra brakes, which have cost me hours striving for perfection. Suffered similar issues that other people have reported in the wider CX Comp thread, in the end used the credit card method and eye to adjust as required. Cable tension from STI levers to chicken levers has been tricky with just enough adjustment on the barrel to pick up tension from STI. But the STI levers are pulling too close to the bars so will need to start again once cable stretches after initial use.

I haven't rode the bike properly yet due to work comitments and shocking weather (I am a runner who enjoys cycling). So only time will tell how the bike rides. Looking forward to getting out there.

Overall still very happy with bike and price paid.

I was going to buy one of the CX teams. I'm slightly put off now, think I'll go with the giant.

You can fit 23's if you like, I've ridden mine fitted with them for six months without any problems, but the ride can be rather harsh so I've fitted continental Ultra gatorskins 25's to mine

I went to collect my Boardman CX Comp first thing this morning, and when i checked it over the seat tube had a dent in it!
Theyve now ordered me another, which i should get on Monday.
I'm a little bit gutted, but it does look a cracking bike.
