Not into 'best bands', but I think the most underrated band ever is The Kinks, and ray davies obviously the most undersung songwriter ever.

That's obviously the way he likes playing it, but in the future they will be up their with the best.

I agree. They could be my favourite band some days...

To this day I'm convinced the Kinks were knowingly patchy. Like the Beach Boys. Utter brilliance and then total drivel, but without the excuse of mental illness in their case.

Having read Ray Davis´s autobiography, I am pretty much convinced the guy is a manic depressive, and the relationship between Dave and Ray was/is a very interesting one. I am also suspicious of consistency!

Which bits of the Kinks do you think were patchy?

Their entire output after Muswell Hillbillies, from the mid-to-late 70s, was drivel! You can make an argument for Misfits, but that´s about it.

They did also go through a period of churning out very similar ´swinging London´ social sterotypes songs. Compare those to Sunny Afternoon, Dead End Street, or anything off Something Else, and I think there is a major gap in real quality. Mind you even their least ambitious songs are streets ahead of the entire output of most bands of the period.
