I really dislike Arthur, and after Muswell Hillbillies I really find them very patchy indeed. But the frustrating thing was that you still got the occaional gem like "No More Looking Back" - one of my favourite songs. I'm sure that they could have done far better, but there was that perverse stubbornness against doing what everyone wanted.

Never having owned a Kinks record but having realised how much of a soundtrack to UK life much of their music was, I bought the greatest hits last year and stumbled across a track called "Don't Forget To Dance" which I think is almost tear-inducingly beautiful. I'd never heard it before. Was that one of the one's from the patchy period?

The Kinks were a good band, but Ray Davies always strikes me as a miserable git. What's that song about how he's not being paid enough for his music, and oh, it's a hard life being a musician ... The Money - Go - Round, that's it. Ok, Ray, why not go and get a job in a garage or something, if it's that hard? I can't be doing with successful musicians bemoaning their lot.

of course Ramones

Certainly the best band ever for 2-minute blasts of sheer unadulterated stupid.

I also like Japanese all-girl Ramones fans, Shonen Knife, for the same reason plus the fact that their songs are about robots, jelly and crabs and bananas, and they are the most fun I have ever had at a gig (Shibuya, Tokyo, 2006). Japan understands the idea of the 'band' as gang more than most, and they take it all the way...

aahh, the smell of cool eruriditism. I must say FM, that since bonj has gone I look up to you for wit.

I think that the recession is being echoed in a 'cool poster' crunch. First bonj has gone, then you had a wobble, and I even had a drunken sort of exclamation.

Look, I'm being bullied in my latest thread, which wouldn't have happened 6 months ago:

you're also boring. The plants exposed to the glare of my lap top screen containing your boring posts have all died.

You owe me 2 plants. Send me your paypal details and an apology. I bid you goodnight.
