What would other people have done in a situation like this? Genuinely curious.
As soon has he stopped i would have got off my bike. I wouldn't cycle away as from the looks of it you have nowhere to go he couldn't. I would then place my bike in front of my side ways and if he touched me I would have hit him with the back cog. A right and left hook if he came back. If he came back I wouldn't stop until i knew for sure he was 1: not going to do it again or 2 not getting back up, giving me time to leave.
At that part where he stops hitting him I would have right hooked him making sure I knocked the farker out then got his keys and chucked them off the nearest bridge or area of such.

That's what I was thinking! Knock him out, grab the keys and dump them down a drain.

A caution was never really enough, even if he just jumped out of the car and clocked you, but the fact that he chased you twice and then assaulted you is beyond the limits of cautionable.
Twice he had time to think about what he was doing and still went after you.
These are the people we need off our streets and roads.

OP - You showed remarkable restraint and I'm glad the consequences of his actions were not more serious for you.

But guys two wrongs don't make a right.

The down side is, if you had whacked him, but being an unfit lardy person they had been badly injured, you would be in big doo doo's....

Good on the OP for the self control. You had the upper hand.

If its in self defensive its not losing the upper hand.
I didn't see anyone coming to save the day. Knocking the guy out would have been well with in the OP right
