That's what I do, generally at Sainsbugs, it's using the scanners so you don't need to pack at the tills. It's risky for the supermarket as people could put extra things in without scanning, hence the reason every so often you can get a random bag check when you scan. That always happens when you're in a hurry.

Aha, never thought of that as a reason. As you say, leaves it open for less honest folk to scam but I can see the logic.

These days...

Sainsburys - #1 these days, decent fresh produce (although it does run out), best fish/non meat options of the big supermarkets, Nectar points get better prices and are quite generous with personalised options (convert to Avios). Also use for my mum for online shops. A 10 minute or so walk or decent parking in the evenings when I mostly shop (less good for bike though). Easy and quick to pay esp with Smart scan
Tesco - super close, mostly use now for certain things like single serve natural yogurts or if something like cat food is on offer. Easy and quick to pay, decent carpark
Waitrose (usually Little stores)- for the free coffee and very specific things like Jacksons bread for my mum, and decent yellow sticker. They've stopped doing my two preferred ready meals of the past  Car parking a pain
Aldi - mostly for things like nuts, their fresh produce is ok, but doesn't last, not sure about their fish and cheese tends to be very short dated. Limited choice often. Chocolate is disappointing! I like their jelly and custard pots
ASDA - only if in town, definitely gone downhill (and yes, less good value now). Clearly have an issue with theft as now one way in and out and have to walk a long way round to get out if haven't bought anything! I used to use the little one not too far away, but haven't been there in ages. Used to be good for cut flowers
Coop - barely ever, although I have bought their £30 Vintage Champagne for Xmas day after looking at reviews (did have to go to two stores) 🍾
Morrisons - used to go very occasionally, but as the Sutton one is now closed having been pretty much condemned due to the carpark on top being structurally dangerous, won't go there again

Lidl, worst of the lot I usually walk round and then either walk out empty handed or with one random thing (possibly a bakery item oops). Their "fresh" produce is dreadful IME and their fish always tastes weird - off or salty, their cheese is no better/cheaper than anywhere else, much too meat heavy in terms of their ready meals/specials for a pescatarian! Long waits for self check out, severely lacking in staff

My main shop is in Tesco, but do a top up in Asda dureing the week, Think Tesco is reasonable value but certain things are better in Asda, bottled sparkling water in Tesco 75p same looking bottles in Asda 55p.
Up until a few months ago thought Lidi great but only my view there prices are now same or greater than Asda or Tesco, Aldi cat litter and there dishwasher tablets where always best value but not more expensive than Asda or Tesco.
Hate online but from the few main shopping outlets online i have used the wooden spoon must go to Asda, every time i tried them have ended up wishing i had learnt from my mistake the last time and had hours of fun both on phone and online to resolve issues and i dont mean just a few missing items but credit for there instore service.

Having a food allergy (Gluten) I have to trawl all of them to get a range of goods as some are only available in one.
In terms of those wider stocked or not gluten affected anyway I use the Trolley app to see where the best prices are. Typically most products are on offer somewhere e,g, currently a 4 pack of Activia yoghurts is cheapest in Asda @ £1.75. Then their are the the various mobile app offers which mean every fortnight currently a bottle of milk (two pints) is 75p at Waitrose and around 20-27p more at Sainbsburys for as many as I want. At Asda last night I got a £1 off 2 £1.75 packs of yoghurts.
