Asda price hikes

Weird - can;t see how it would work

surely the main problem with self scan tills is people either weighing something expensive but saying it is something cheap

or people just missing bits out

either would give you a valid receipt which would allow you to get out

I suppose there must be a good reason for it but it does seems useless!

From my point of view:
Asda (closest to me) - only occasionally for a few bits
Lidl - Most often
Sainsbury - Quite a bit
Tesco - Rarely
Morrisons - Even more rarely
Waitrose - Never
Aldi - Only if I'm going past and Mrs Sterlo wants something.

Just feel the need to say...
I've noticed their prices going up again. I've shopped there for decades and generally buy the same stuff so you do get some muscle memory on prices. Seems every time I go in there stuff creeps up 10, 20, 30p
A lot of their own brand stuff has shot up, double sometimes triple the cost since this bout of inflation.
Apple sauce used to be around 38p..and quite acceptable it is. Now it's 98p
I could go on...we shop more and more at Aldi now, far more sensible prices.

In Aldi they just seem to cut to the chase and whack 40p on top

You can only do that with produce sold loose, mainly fruit & veg. Anything else, the syetm has the weight programmed in, and if it isn't within a certain tolerance of that weight, it will complain.

or people just missing bits out

That is no different to people popping a few bits in their bag before reaching manned checkouts. They will always find it hard to stop that type of small scale theft.

It certainly isn't foolproof, but I'm sure it reduces the problem a little.

For us
Tesco - main weekly shop (about 4 miles away)
Waitrose - secondary shop, not every week, but quite often, usually just a few items (about 3 miles away).
Sainsbury - if we want specific things (about 3 miles away)
Aldi - if they have "middle aisle" things we want - such as those ski gloves last week. (About 3 miles away)
Lidl - if we are passing (the nearest is 14 miles away), tending to look particularly for wine & bread, but also middle aisle.
Morrisons - don't even know where the nearest one is, probably Cardiff (15+ miles away). Haven't been in one since before COVID.
Asda - very rarely, again our nearest one is about 14-15 miles away.

We also have Tesco Express in both Pontyclun and Cowbridge (2.5 or 3 miles away), which we use for odd items if we are passing.

Didn't stop that policeman putting through Doughnuts as 'Loose Carrots' did it, (PC Simon Read I seem to recall)

Aye I'm right, he was in uniform and 'on-duty' at the time, sacked for gross misconduct.

Here, it's as follows:

Tesco - the vast majority.
Aldi - for herbal teas and the odd few bits if I don't want to go, or don't need to go to Tesco.
Waitrose - occasionally, mainly for bargains off the counters and bits I can't get elsewhere.
Sainsbury's - no, as the choice in there isn't that good and they're expensive.
Co-op - for a few bits and their YS cabinet, though mainly if I'm passing, as they're too spendy for a full shop.
Iceland - very rarely. It's been a couple of years since I was last in there.
Lidl - yes, but only if there's stuff I need, as the nearest ones are either in Huntington, March and Cambridge.

No Asda or Morrisons nearby (Wisbech & Kings Lynn IIRC), and the nearest "proper" M&S is in Cambridge. There is a small one attached to a BP petrol station in Littleport.

Something I see in Asda, accepting it may happen in other stores but I never really noticed it in Aldi or Tescos..
People using their carrier bags to do the shop, rather than the baskets.
To me, thus smacks of attempting to thieve...or just plain stupid 'ill do it my way'
Seen it quite a lot lately....

That said, Asda have quite a robust security presence I've even seen them intercept some ropey looking shoppers in the aisles.

Forgot to add...shopping there today I hung 5 bag for life carriersnin the trolley handle. When I got to the tills....ooer where are they ?

I'd left my trolley to one side while I perused the yellow sticker cabinet...I reckon that's when someone swiped them. Low lifes...

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
My shop is generally:

Sainsbury's - almost always home delivery
Co-Op - used for a top-up near the weekend
Tesco Express - emergency items as it's walkable
Asda - nope. I feel like a lab rat in there it's so bright. Also usually messy.
Morrisons - nope as well. It's a few miles away so I don't go.
Tesco - there's a big store a couple of miles away but I very, very rarely go.
Aldi - nope.
Lidl - also nope.
Iceland - nope as well.
M&S - no longer nearby so no.
Waitrose - in Dewsbury? Not a chance.

That's what I do, generally at Sainsbugs, it's using the scanners so you don't need to pack at the tills. It's risky for the supermarket as people could put extra things in without scanning, hence the reason every so often you can get a random bag check when you scan. That always happens when you're in a hurry.
