Asda price hikes

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Stuff's been going up everywhere. Mind you, I buy ingredients to cook with from scratch as opposed to buying ready-made, and own brand instead of big brand, so largely it's much of a muchness between Tesco and Aldi in terms of cost. Co-op and Sainsbos are noticeably more spendy, but Waitrose can have some good buys, and they do have things I can't get elsewhere.

Groceries for two people for a week works out somewhere in the £35 to £45 range depending on what is needed. Albeit neither I nor the parental drink, so that's a big saving on our part.

I buy my herbal teas in Aldi, as they are 95p for 40 tea bags as opposed to the £1.70 in Tesco. I do *prefer* the Tesco ones, but since I don't think they're nearly twice as good as the Aldi teas, I can live with the Aldi ones. And you do get used to the slight difference in flavour.

Otherwise, if the price is similar on like-for-like, then I just buy what I prefer. I try to stick to seasonal produce as much as possible, and I'm one of these nerdy shoppers who does check price per kilo across all the options.

I wish my bill was that low , add another £100 some weeks for 4 of us and the mrs does buy shop brands .

Despite the criticism its getting I do quite like Asda, above Tesco and Sainsburys certainly. But they've got form though for cocking things up as I remember them buying all the old Gateway stores and nearly going bust, then 25 years later it seems like they're sliding away again.

Asda like Morrisons is now a company with massive debt dumped on its balance sheet from it's take over. So it's got to make that money back some how plus they've now got less room to cut prices unlike the rest.

Both Morrisons and Asda seem to have worsened in terms of in store experience, the quality of presentation in Morrisons has really gone downhill, it feels more like a jumble sale lately.

Never been a fan of 'herbal teas' but I prefer green (Chinese) tea to black (Indian) tea, they both come from the same Tea plant just processed differently but I've lost count of the people who when I mention 'Green Tea' "say I don't like that herbal shite" no it's not a herbal infusion it is Tea Leaves. Personally I cannot stand strong 'milky tea with 2-3 sugars in it (Builders tea) so I drank black Coffee for years but here's another bugbear the number of people who'd say "Oh I put a bit of milk in by accident, is that OK" or the ones who stir the cuppa with a spoon that has been in 'sweet milky tea' xx(

Green tea is just the dried leaves, while black tea, the leaves are fermented before being dried.

I love peppermint tea, and chamomile is a really good vehicle for other flavours e.g. lavender, ginger, lemon... Not a big fan of the made up blends, as they often have rosehip in them, which tends to drown out all the other ingredients.

Yes Morrisons looks to be getting more and more desperate every day with all the random stuff. Which feels like they've just let loose anyone at the cash and carry. Buying what ever is on offer at the time. With every other price looks to be more card price, it's quickly becoming a member only cash and carry without the price savings.

Yikes, I feel your pain xxx :surrender:

Though I yellow sticker a lot, and always keep an eye out for good buys. Today's effort included a dozen dented cans of tomato at 16p each, and a whole side of salmon for £13-ish on a clubcard offer (£11.50 per kilo as opposed to 24). The fish is big enough to divide into a dozen portions, which I will freeze.

Not for me, Green Tea tastes like Tea and is naturally slightly sweet. If I run out I'll make a weak cup of PG and stick some Lemon juice in it, only needs a few drops just enough to 'clear' it.

We mainly go to Aldi for everyday shopping, as their store is closest and most convenient to home.

But, if we wish to incorporate breakfast into a shopping trip, and/or need to buy stuff that Aldi do not sell, then we use Asda. It seems to me that a lot of their prices are quite a bit dearer than Aldi, unless it's one of the "price matched" variants.

But today, I shall mainly be doing my shopping at Home Bargains, as I need some of their reasonably priced firewood .....

This type of thing is actively putting me off a lot of the big supermarkets now to the point of avoiding if I don't have my cards.

Aldi now have self serve tills so small purchases are a lot easier

Here is something my local Lidl has done which puts me off - you need to scan a receipt to get out of the self service checkout area now

Came across this in Italy about 6 years ago. Couldn't work out how to get out as they didn't have what I wanted so didn't have a receipt. Luckily the locals worked out the issue and used their receipt to let me out. May be to prevent shoplifting though staff won't intervene with shoplifters anyway (or shouldn't)

Seems to be an example of a solution to a problem that falls well short of what's needed.

I changed my shopping habits at retirement. I have time to be organised and take advantage of the best deals. The main shop is at Aldi, generally I don't experience the fresh produce issues others mention. I think the cost has increased by £12-15/week over the past 2-3 years. My other shop will be at Tesco for things I can't get at Aldi. I only visit Tesco when I'm on that side of town.

I don't like ASDA at all and avoid the store, same applies to Sainsbury's though I will shop there under protest. By chance I was in Morrison's this week, they stock Aviation gin, and was struck by how downmarket and dull the place seemed. Lidl is well off my usual journeys and Waitrose is just a big NO!! Yes, the quality is excellent.

I do like self-check out. I can pack things according to where they live in the house. Saves loads of time when unpacking. Aldi self-scan is the best by some way.
