Whilst I agree with you somewhat, try taking South West Rail for a year and you might see the benefit!!is that really a benefit? Not much of a future where all workers are in their own little cells and all interactivity is via Zoom. I do one day a week from home and that is enough, I like the intellectual stimulus of actually working with people.
On a more serious note, it does mean that I have a lot more day. Instead of getting up at 7, cycling 20 mins to the station, sitting on the train (if it arrives) for 30-40 mins then cycling another 30mis to the office and vice versa, I get up drop the kids to school and my wife to work and then go for a walk to pick leaves for the tortoises, have my breakfast and then do some work. I also get to make my own lunch and jump on the bike for a 20 minute pedal to somewhere nice or if it's raining watch TV or some such.
I do miss the social interaction sometimes and it does make you feel less part of a company, but the other lifestyle benefits are great!
