The price difference with diesel is only 10% off Vs on motorway. Supercharger Vs home electricity is much great difference I would imagine??

Vs home electricity, yes, but the comparison was with public chargers, and I imagine the difference there is much less between on-and-off motorway than between motorway and home.

But I think the comparison would have failed if that were taken into account. The 2L diesel is only cheaper to run than the EV on commercial chargers if the diesel is filling up off-motorway while the EV is using the motorway superfast chargers.
Exactly. These comparisons usually fail to take into account that EV charging goes like this:-
  • Cheapest: Home Charging (7.5p to 30p depending on tariff and charging time)
  • Low expense: Public 22kw Charger (28p to 40p)
  • High expense: Public 50kw charger (44p to 60p)
  • Very high expense: Public >50kw charger (usually motorways) (69p+)
Similarly, your Diesel could be anywhere from 141.9p per litre to 156.6p per litre.

A full tank from 10% in my ID4 (250 miles):-
  • Home: £5.60
  • Public 22kw: £20.91 to £29.88
  • Public 50kw: £32.86 to £44.82
  • Public >50kw: £51.54
A full tank from empty in my Renault Grand Scenic (500 miles) divided by two for comparison purposes:-
  • £42.57
  • £46.98
So yes, if you only charge at the most expensive 50kwh superchargers, currently diesel is better value.

Hands up all the EV users who have used a paid for 50kwh+ supercharger?
And how many times since you got your car have you used one?

For me, never and none in 8 months of ownership. I have used a public charger about 10 times. 8 of those were free. The rest 22kwh chargers for a short partial charge to get me back home.

Depends. For a fair comparison you can only fuel your 2l diesel at motorway service stations.
How does the cost compare now?
I'm buggered then - no motorways in Suffolk or Norfolk making the nearest the Thurrock services near the QE2 bridge (Essex) about 70 miles away

And for majority of the time I bet only 1 or 2 people occupying it ?

I dispair with the market. It's about fast as fark/big/etc. Electric car 'leasing' is at 'willy waving' levels. I'll just ride to work, on my tank bike, and just think, feck it.

I'd only use a public charger whilst on motorway hence it's a valid comparison...

An article popped up on my news feed that a Taunton dealer is closing due to Stellantis removing it's franchise.

I Googled Stellantis and it looks like they are closing 138 dealerships In the UK. This isn't their final position, so could be Vauxhall/Citroen etc could about to be quitting the UK.

Given they're complaining about the EV revolution, likely due to missing the boat I can't see Stellantis being viable

The international automotive giant behind Vauxhall has warned that it could close its British factories with a loss of 2,000 manufacturing jobs unless the government renegotiates incoming post-Brexit trading rules on sourcing batteries for electric vehicles.

Did a quick google and that’s what I got , it’s been on the news a lot lately , for all brands . Anyway this is leading into NACA territory!

I believe Mitsubishi have pulled out of the UK too, in 2020

Mitsubishi left the UK in 2020 as part of a cost-saving strategy that initially involved leaving all of Europe. It reversed that decision and has streamlined its European presence to 17 markets, down from 32 in 2019. However, such has been the shift to EVs in the UK in the meantime that Mitsubishi doesn’t feel confident to re-enter with its planned line-up.

must be able to sell more non EVs in Europe I assume for now .

As manufacturers improve fuel efficiency we buy bigger and heavier cars. Insane.

We should all be on bikes or driving around in 1000kg 75mpg cars by now!
