Are we being forced to go electric?

No - that one baffles me because why would you take it down a country road limited to 20mph and which has 7 speed humps?

Maybe that's his only car? And why not walk the kids to school?

Nobody has a £200,000+ Lamborghini Aventador as their only car.
Walking isn't really an option. No safe pedestrian path or cycle route to get to the school (the school banned cycling to school for that reason).

I've no idea what car it is. Maybe his partner has the 4x4 and doesn't do the school run

Seems a silly place for a school, don't they lay on buses? Private school presumably. Many of the state schools around here have no car exclusion zones at school drop off and pick up times

Oh yes, many school coaches. Doesn't mean that little Princess is willing to travel in one. Or it could be that she just feels like showing off that day?
We don't use the coach as we only live 12 minutes away and the cost is far higher than just doing drop offs and pickups.

My old neighbour's wife used to drive their kids into school 11 miles, cos they didn't like the bus.

I took the p!ss out of her and them, then she would drive them the 200yds to the bus stop from home!

Meanwhile, our kids always walked to the bus stop and caught the bus. In Summer I used to make them walk home the two miles from where the school bus had its last stop.
Before going to secondary school they would cycle or walk the 2 miles to the local village school each way..

We moved from suburbia to the countryside 20yrs ago so they could do this, play in the street, walk in the fields, breath fresh air.

My daughter who loved the city life is planning on moving upto a local village near where we live now. Our son lives in another local village, hates cities, especially London, solely due to seeing his sisters window sill black with soot from ICE traffic pollution.

Our other children are not old enough but will like to live in the area we have now settled.

Good for both of them , they worked hard to be able to drive something interesting that gives them pleasure.

I'd agree with you if it weren't for the fact that their pleasure is actually paid for by other people:
- being intimidated by large high powered vehicles
- suffering the concomitant noise pollution
- having the planet fried by their emissions

Large, hyperpowered 4x4s are appalling vehicles in every way imaginable, but particularly in their effects on cyclists and pedestrians.

Only people round our neck of the woods in a G-Wagon seem to be drug dealers, I just don’t get buying one of those 6.3 Litre V8 ones, with road tyres, it’s like spending in excess of £150k on a pedigree bull, then having it castrated, as for those super cars, again on hire for Asian weddings for Everyman & his dog to thrash round in

I just don't grasp why people want to drive off-roaders around the roads of Surrey. Maybe it's future-proofing given the state of the roads...!
I'm thinking tank tracks for my next vehicle.

Drove into Epsom on Burgh Heath Road the other day. It's by no means the worst road in the county, but is surprisingly poor for a town road which serves housing, a college, a station, a race course, a golf club, stables, walking, etc etc etc. Not quite sure why the road needs speed bumps.

All the roads around Epsom are shocking, have been for years (I was commuting to there up until 2019). As an example, Nork Way is appalling.
The pavements are shocking too, so much so my elderly and pretty immobile parents are essentially housebound as a result
That road has speed humps as it used to be a windy racetrack past lots of housing

No picture, but l saw one of the electric VW ‘bus’ (‘buzz’?) in Edinburgh
It looked good!!

My dream next car/camper...
The girlfriend is not as keen
Saw my first one in the flesh the other day too, other than the stupidly limited range and the exorbitant price tag it's great!

Yes, lots of people have said on here that the range limitations of EVs aren't really very important to most people, because the vast majority of car journeys are well within the range capacity.

But for camper vans I think that is much less true. You are more often than not going to want to travel a a fair distance form home, and then often stay on a campsite which is unlikely to have usable charging facilities.

I can believe it.
I once drove over a massive pothole in Fir Tree Road (about 100 yards west of Nork Way). Had extreme neck pain later in the day, and had to go to the GP for pain relief (physio, diclofenac, and an offer of amitriptyline if needed). A really horrible experience, which the GP described as "whiplash"; took over a month to recover.

15+ years later , roads feel like they're rapidly falling apart. Damage to cars, injuries, must be more commonplace.

As for pavements - I never see much care being lavished on those either, and lots of them are about to be dug up by Openreach to upgrade copper PSTN cables to fibre. Doesn't bode well.
