The politics of envy, how can you judge and generalise about someone you've never met?

Covetousness and envy - both sides of the same coin!!

Sorry to offend, I am not trying to judge a particular person, but Audi do seem to be marketed at a certain sector of the community.
Its not envy. If you gave me an Audi I would just sell it or give it away. Can belts that need regular replacement at great cost, suspension that is both expensive and not overly reliable is a poor choice.

Does anyone think that more expensive cars are bought solely as a means of transport?
True. I look upon the couple of dads who drive to my daughter's school in these as being utterly insane.
They are both custom jobs so presumably >£150,000. Luxury off road 4x4 vehicles that will never be driven off road.

Then there's the dad who drives one of these:-

The school is down a road with *many* speed bumps which the d*ckhead has difficulty driving over.

If I had their money I'd be in the Tesla X gang. As it is, my kids are very happy to have joined the ID4 gang (3 of us so far!).
Interestingly (or not), my daughters friends are pretty much all in the supportive and friendly "can just about afford it" group with fairly standard cars and houses. I'm not sure what that says about wealth and the sort of "friends" those girls get - they tend to be the "popular" girls, usually making themselves look stupid on school trips as they get stuff removed from their bags - or in the worst, and very sad case, when their parents just forget to pick them up at the end of the trip.

Good for both of them , they worked hard to be able to drive something interesting that gives them pleasure.

Its likely that those who can afford a premium vehicle, whether its a ICE or EV, have the disposable income and view the expense similar to those with lesser wealth of buying a £2k used car.

Western capitalism

I have enough disposable income I could theoretically afford to buy a reasonable new vehicle, or a premium used one.

But I don't choose to do so, and I suspect most in that position don't.

Having seen them, they don't look as if they worked hard... That said, of course they can drive whatever they want. I just don't grasp why people want to drive off-roaders around the roads of Surrey. Maybe it's future-proofing given the state of the roads...!

The green one doesn’t look like your typical off roader
