Are we being forced to go electric?

We will need a bigger leap in range , call it range anxiety call it whatever you like but in all seriousness that is where we are . Maybe by the end of the decade and it’s 100% better , let’s hope so . You would have to be mad to buy an EV right now knowing you have to tow a caravan .

I did say 10-15 years. I agree that right now it really isn't practical.

And as I posted earlier, the woeful maximum towing ability, long range Tesla 1000kg, Discovery 4000kg, just not suitable

BMW iX 2500kg, Tesla X 2268kg. DIscovery 3500kg. SO yes, the Discovery can still pull more weight. But what on earth are you pulling? Most caravans are 1800kg or less.

Someone i was talking too at work was going on about the performance vs battery range and was saying could the engines be "detuned " for less power more in line with current fuel/hybrid cars and range extended ?

EVs have eco mode, which dulls acceleration. Our Leaf its called 'Eco' the Teslas its 'Chill'

But I thought we were talking about workplaces? Nobody wants the admin hassle. It's got to be as easy as possible.

We are. The chargers we use are provided as an employee service (at a discounted rate) and can only be used by employees using a dedicated RFID card and account, but they are run the same as public chargers, including overstay. Luckily it’s only a 2 minute walk to go and move it.

Well - there aren't any engines for a start. As @CXRAndy said, most EVs have the ability to choose between a performance or sport mode and an eco mode. The key difference is that in ECO, the acceleration isn't as harsh and the regen braking is a bit harder. Even in ECO mode, if you put your foot to the floor you will get a surge of power as you get instant torque and all the power to the wheels unlike an ICE. The biggest way to improve range is to stop driving like a boy racer and cruise as much as possible. On the motorway you'll go further in the left lane doing 60 with the HGVs than doing 70 or 80mph in the fast lane.

well to get technical decrease the instant power then  , im not really up to date with ti i am only trying to figure out ways

I generally leave it full power and just modify my acceleration. To extend range even further around 60-65mph is a good compromise for speed and economy. The benefit is that slower you go the better the range gets-obviously there is a sensible safety limit on faster roads. However for town/city or local road commuting EVs become very efficient, stop start grid lock they use very little indeed

Was reading on one of my forums about an owner of a iX , hated it for towing . I think it would need a lot of planning. Also stumbled upon this , slightly more positive spin on EVs and caravans . However it’s all in the planning journey wise .

That's so true , i just set cruise control at 64 mph and find that's fast enough and it gives a better return in our ice Nissan Note

I don’t think they will, local example of Bradford, they’re clamping down on vans/HGV’s, penalising those who deliver services & goods, whilst ignoring all the clapped out diesel cars clogging up the roads, terrified of losing people’s votes imho

Even Euro 5 trucks are being penalised in places
Euro 6 (I think we’re up to a ‘C’ suffix of them) are very clean
One comparison that l saw states that, if you imagine the emissions of a pre-Euro truck being an A4 sized piece of paper, a Euro 6 emits what would amount to a (standard sized) 1st class stamp

And the nay-sayers still think they’re filthy/dirty menaces

I tend to drive at 60MPH, or slightly less (if clear enough not to get in the way of trucks)

I went to York yesterday afternoon, went via Castleford/Mart Pannall/Ridge Road/Crooked Billet/Towton, joining the A64 at Tadcaster
Then returned via the; A64/A1/M62

On arrival home, the combined average MPG was 53.2
Not bad for what my car is

That's if your gauge can be relied on though . I've always believed mine but I may have been lied to.
