Are we being forced to go electric?

For reasons of sense and fuel economy I set the cruise control to 60 going down the A55 to North Wales last week.

Now this is fine if you are being followed by UK restricted trucks but not the Irish ones going to Holyhead.

They are not as restricted as UK trucks and get right up your rear flashing their lights and blaring their horns.

They are fast enough to get up your rear but not fast enough to get past so you end up increasing your cruise to 65 to get out of the way of them.

Same goes with all the European trucks who use that route.

Supercharging is 15-30 mins to get you back upto 80-85%. The real benefit of charging is you plug it in, walk away, come back to a charged EV.

Each evening it literally takes me less than an extra 30 secs to plug in and lock up

Do you have that on a macro so you don't have to type it every few pages ?

That's if your gauge can be relied on though . I've always believed mine but I may have been lied to.

I always brim it, when filling up (every time), then do the maths
The average is generally 52-53MPG

A couple of weeks ago, we had several days in Cumbria
Not easy roads, in the main
(including Wrynose & HardKnott passes)

We were constantly ‘5-up’ (with only about 5 miles being driven solo, by me)

480 (or so) miles came out at 46MPG, on working it out

That could apply to just about every post on this thread (except mine, of course)

What I have learnt from the first 4000 posts:

Some people like EVs and some don't.

Not liking EV's is fine , it's the relentless repetition of rubbish from the anti's that gets me down. If this was a forum for adults I would say a lot more.

By the time I get fully electric, in 2 cars time, the battery tech will be better for weight, recharge time & cost, the infrastructure network will be sorted, and tax and electricity prices will likely be similar to running an ice car....inevitable convergence

I'm wary of the small size 50miles add on batteries, have enough issues with regular batteries on ice lasting 3 years, and paying more upfront for the faff of plugging in every night rather than once a week or fortnight ....well seems nuts to me....I am private buyer with no tax advantages

And some very good explanations have been put forward, on both sides of the argument.
For sure there's a lot of misunderstanding and ignorance about - I don't mind admitting I've learned a lot!

Simply put, the switch to EVs, which complete by 2050, is going to affect every single person in the country to a huge degree. There are lots of benefits, many winners, but also some losers.
And lots of unanswered questions.

Luckily there are still nearly 7 years before new ICE sales are withdrawn, and nearly 12 for hybrids, I suggest that time is needed.

Can you charge off road ?
If so it's no faff plugging in.
A car that would last a week or two on a charge for our EV mileage would be massively expensive. And why lug around a huge battery.

As @cougie uk said - there really is no faff. I get out of the car, pop the fuel cap panel, and move the cable from the wall of my house to the charging port then lock the car. Job done in less than 10 secs.

I don't have to stand in the cold for 5 minutes and my hands don't smell of diesel.

My car does circa 850 miles per tank so rarely have to fill up.

I wear disposable latex gloves when I do fill up so my hands don't stink of diesel.

I get out of the car and go in the house.

And my car lives about a hundred yards away from my upstairs flat. Do I throw a cable out the bedroom window and run it across the car park?

I have done that on holiday...

Do your flats provide parking ? Have you spoken to anyone about their plans for electric cars ?
