Are we being forced to go electric?

Unfair because it is subsidising those who choose EVs over those who can't (or won't), by paying for their fuel.

It is arguable that the tax free bike purchase schemes are unfair on those who for whatever reason can't use a bike to commute. But those schemes are government sponsored, they don't cost the employer much at all.

It's subsidising a choice that, agree with it or not, is deemed to be beneficial to society and the environment.

It's employers' choice to provide perks to their employees depending on cost and predicted benefit (recruitment, employee satisfaction, staff retention, green credentials etc). Other perks include free parking, for all cars not just EVs. As we're near the city centre that's quite financially attractive. Again, arguably unfair on those who have to take public transport to work.

My employer also have a salary sacrifice car lease scheme but only for EVs. I've not taken advantage of it because my perception is I don't do enough miles for it to be beneficial and at the moment am happy with my current car. I need to do the sums on this though.

There was talk of our employer putting in a few charging points on the newly built car park, no details as yet but it could be the kind of thing to persuade me to switch to electric a bit sooner than I otherwise would have...mainly due to having no off street parking.
Although I cycle most of the time I would maybe drive once a week to charge up.
Hopefully it would be well managed with no bay hogging or it could be a waste of time.

Looking at some of the standards of parking on there currently I am fearing the worst.

I suppose the utopia is (if every eventually has to go electric) a charging point at every parking space.

However I would imagine the car parking companies would see the amount of spaces reduced to accommodate the chargers, unless they get a "kickback" from the companies who install the chargers it would reduce their revenue in public car parks.

Ours are free. It’s a perk and to encourage people toward EVs.

Why would it be unfair? Is it unfair on people who can’t ride a bike to provide racks, or a tax free bike purchase scheme?

Any schemes to encourage drivers aren't great. I used to work with people whose only exercise each day was the walk from the car park to the office.
A lot of those people could easily have walked or cycled in.
It was sad to see people a lot younger than me not able to take the stairs as they'd be panting.

Interesting recent take on the 'go electric campaign', is how will large caravan / camp sites that have several hundred pitches or holiday camps manage in providing enough charging points for their customers - ? One site in particular has 1000 static pitches plus several hundred more touring / tent pitches. Fast forward to our all electric Utopia and visualise the electric infrastructure that this site would need in order to provide enough reliable charging points for even three or four hundred customers who would want to charge up on the same day before leaving for home.

If they want to stay in business they will adapt.

Maybe a good business opportunity to offer spaces with car recharging facilities at a premium.

I agree.

The only issue is the grid infrastructure in some regions. Remember this is privately owned and investment is problematic in places. There are a lot of requests for chargepoints waiting on regional electric companies and national grid. Government needs to be joined up.

You do know that most of these campsites are in the back of beyond . Infrastructure will be an issue for some . The end user will ultimately have to pay for all of this . Might just price people out of the market completely ? But hey that’s life eh !

When on a campsite (New Forrest)we charged our 100kW car on trickle, so there was no big surge. It took two days, we weren't there to go off driving. You go to do local things like walking, or cycling.

I would argue if you go to a destination and then spend most days driving away, stay in a hotel or BnB near a town or city.
