Are we being forced to go electric?

Best use up all that oil and watch the world burn safe in the knowledge that no one was asked to change a single thing .

Is that really what I wrote?
I don't think so.
I was merely pointing out a (doubtless uncomfortable) home truth, that many, many people in this country - despite however much they may wish to reduce continual damage to the planet and to their local environment - will not see any way of taking advantage of the 'new generation' of 'clean' personal transport without some very, very substantial changes and expectations in society and in policy but above all in practical matters that would enable all to participate in it.

These sound like the problems envisaged when people moved from horses to cars.

And look how long that took.

Why will they find it "achingly difficult"?
It's far easier than using a petrol pump and done in seconds. The cable is easy to connect and easy to disconnect.

Have you ever lived in an upstairs flat, or a terraced house in a narrow street of similar properties, where all front doors open straight onto the pavement? And where the back yards open into a narrow, 2-person wide ginnel?

We have to stop using fossil fuels. EVs are part of the solution for some people in some situations. We won’t achieve the full benefits until the grid is decarbonised here and wherever cars are made. The discussion now is how to make that transition in a just and fair way and how quickly is possible. There are many real concerns and situations that need addressing and other issues that the fossil fuel lobby are happy to stir up to delay things. Longer term, if we are to address congestion, there is also the need to help people uncouple from having to rely on a personal vehicle, but that’s another thread.

If folk want to have an EV despite home living issues will find a way.

Those who bleat will be left with public transport or shanks's pony

Maybe even a pedal cycle!

EVers minimising problems of converting vs ICEers maximising them.

As usual the truth will be somewhere in between.

I am not sure anyone is actually saying that EVs are not the future, or a very big part of it... until an even greener future is discovered, that is. The debate is about the time to get to that future and the jury will be out on that for a long time.

Whatever the future is I predict it will not be cycling.

I think it might be more true to replace that all-encompassing 'most people' with 'most people in some social demographics' ...
A great many people will find it impossible, or at the very least, achingly difficult, to charge at home.

I did mean most people who will buy an EV. Very few who would find it that difficult will be prepared to buy one until they have to.

Hopefully, by the time it is their only choice, the charging infrastructure will be good enough they can do so, with public chargers in lampposts or similar - probably not the fastest charger, but also hopefully nowhere near as expensive as the motorway fast chargers.
