I recall there were three gifts in the gospels, but no mention of how many wise men. When I was working in youth work, I worked on a Christmas story involving the fourth wise man. His name was Colin, and he'd brought a teddy, but he turned around after the other three told him it was silly to bring a teddy for such an important occasion; the point being of course that the other "wise men" were being twits: all gifts are important and will be accepted by God.
Also, there is no mention specifically of a donkey in the Old or New Testament. Several asses, but no donkeys; and they say there's no humour in the bible.
