About 40 metres tho' normally never went much below 25M as that gave a longer time.
The 40m was off the side of a wreck as my buddy dropped his tool bag and we went down to retrieve it. We never did find it but found a better one somebody else had dropped.

My normal max was 20-25.
My preferred was 12-15 with plenty of good vis and (as you say) longer dive time.
Did the Thistlegorm in Egypt a couple of times, that was a tad over 30.
My deepest was off the Midas Isles in the Med. That was 44 mtrs. I felt fine but I don't think it's right to do that without good reason.

Not keen on 40m on typical holiday stripy fish dives on a single tank. You've only just got enough gas if there are no problems. Much happier with 2*12 on my back plus a deco tank for UK dives. That gives enough reserve to to do an hour's deco even after loss of one tank's gas. Relying on some other bloke for spare gas seems bonkers to me

Fully agree....I always had a pony.
Never carried 2×12s though.
Tell me, did you ever dive Dorathea quarry in North Wales ?
It dropped to a staggering 120 mtrs and it was very cold.
I think it averaged over one death per year.

Never bothered with overseas diving as we had plenty of scenic stuff plus wrecks for those who like that sort of thing.
The cliff at the N. End of Calve Island was as good as anything found on the Great Barrier Reef according to an Aussie we had with us a few times. He ran a dive school there but came to visit relatives who dived with us.
This only half a mile from our mooring as well as an “ unknown” wreck a few miles away. This latter we kept secret as long as possible but eventually word got out and wreckers appeared and tore it apart for souvenirs. We also dived as far out as Canna and south down the seaward side of Mull.

No, never went to Dorothea. Even my (generally ill-informed) Dad heard of it and say "you're not diving there are you?". Nothing per se wrong with the place. Ill prepared people doing foolish things, and even exceptionally able and well prepared people doing 100m dives has a lot of risk.

I had this racing snail.
Never won much and wasn't particularly quick so I took the shell off to see if it would go faster.
If anything it just seemed to make it more sluggish.

There was this snail who was tired of being so slow and so he bought an expensive sports car. He painted a large Letter S on the door.
When got more confident he entered a motor race and was doing so well that the commentator said" look at that S car go!

Boom tish!

Yeah, I read about that. All the cars were a very similar pace so Monsieur S. Car Go said, 'we just had to slug it out,'
