During the Communist era in East Germany, political jokes could get you a 4 year prison term. Even so long after the wall fell, there are still East German jokes trundling around, partly because the jokes were collected by the West German security services for analysis...

Why do the Stasi (East German secret police) work together in groups of three?
You need one who can read, one who can write, and a third to keep an eye on the two intellectuals.

And a personal favourite:

On a slightly related note I'm currenly reading " Stasi 77 " by David Young. One of a series of detective novels set in East Germany. Quite an interesting read and although obviously I've no experience of life under that regime it does give a different take which for me make the stories more interesting thn the usual detective fare.
