I have been in a similar situation involving an empty flat upstairs and very heavy rainfall which came up the kitchen sink drain upstairs and flowed over. Two of our ceilings had to be replaced involving much work and inconvenience. The upstairs pipe system was a bit unorthodox and probably illegal.
