Ironically, there's a theory that a lot of what we call the "Japanese aesthetic" was in response to a very similar situation in Kyoto: faced with an inability to compete with the wealth of the court in Tokyo or the upstart merchants of Osaka, they just decreed that the simpler lifestyle which they could afford was "superior" to the more lavish style of Tokyo or Osaka, and no-one dared ask why...
