You may jest but one of the Soviet Venus probes, after the formidable feat of a successful soft landing tried to take a soil sample in the few minutes the probe was expected to survive the extreme conditions. Sample was duly taken and analysed and the results were a very surprising mix of organic compounds. Then one of the scientists said "hang on a minute, those chemicals are the plastic the lens cap is made of". Turns out the discarded and subsequently melted lens cap from the camera had fallen in exactly the wrong place and was subsequently "sampled" instead of Venusian soul. After doubtless meticulous preparation and millions of Roubles that experiment got kyboshed by sheer bad luck
