Well, my smart watch went zzzz last night. Second one to fail within a year, so awaiting a warranty return !

Need an Apple Watch, my series 4 is going strong after nearly 4 years of daily wear, also in swimming pool. Yes, it needs to be charged every night now but not a hardship
I bought a 7 on a deal but not using yet, keeping for 'best' (along with the Tag)!

Hardship or not, Apple are charging top dollar for a product with 1/14th the battery life of their largest competitor. That is a serious pith take.

I think you really like watches and horology as do a bunch of people on this thread. You all should take a look at this excellent book by Rebecca Struthers:

The Hands of Time.

I don't think this girl needs much of an excuse to buy another book. Generally. Books here never go amiss.

It's just a fascinating subject really, especially the engineering. And I do get a real kick out of wearing a nice vintage watch.

Long ago I decided that expensive branded watches no longer represented good vfm for me - they never did in truth, but I had convinced myself that they were worth every penny.

I have owned Omega, Rolex, TAG & Breitling and tbh the external build quality, as far as a day to day user like me goes, is no different to that of a few hundred pounds worth of Seiko, Tissot etc.

Yes, some movements are clever but really does it matter? Generally you can't see them anyway. Manual winders are a complete PITA to own, automatics need a rocker-box if you don't wear them every day and a quartz is a quartz - nothing special.

And none keep time as accurately as a GPS tool watch.

I can't see the point of having one tbh. Mrs SD has a nice Breitling which she wears every day - it has sentimental value and it is a nice looking thing in SS with gold rider tabs and strap link inserts but, it always needs adjusting to keep near to perfect time ditto date changes on several months per year.

My couple of hundred quids worth of Garmin just sorts itself out and updates everything via GPS each day.

I'll throw my hat in to the opposite end of that particular debate. Can't say much about your first point as I tend to furkle in the bargain basement section of vintage watches. Though admittedly, ladies' watches don't command such a high price as mens ones - which is distinctly to my advantage.

I actually find a mechanical watch liberating. I pick one of a morning, wind it up (or re-wind it if it's a handwinder rather than an auto), set the time according to my phone and off I go. Of course they're not grab-and-go like my Seiko quartz is, but I find a nice vintage mechanical watch a pleasurable thing to wear, and unless springs go *sproing* (and yes they do, which is why there's always the excuse for N+1) a mechanical watch will always work. And when I think of the amount of money I've piddled away on batteries over the years...

Sure, I *know* it's not going to be as accurate as a smart watch or a gps watch or whatever, but unless you desperately need accuracy down to a fraction of a second, does it really matter? My phone does a good job of that. All I want a watch to do is help me keep track of time. Like what time to come in for lunch, or when to meet up with a friend and the like. I genuinely can't see why they're a PITA, winding up a watch is part of the morning routine, right alongside brushing my teeth, sorting out my hair and tying my shoelaces.

Watch winders? Naah, pointless things on the whole. Unless you've got a watch with loads of different complications that are an arse to set from scratch (and then it does save you a lot of hassle) they're just expensive gadgets for gadgets' sake. Plus they add unnecessary wear to a watch, as it's always working. And let's face it, a basic day-date or day is easy enough to set.

Best thing of all, with the right care, my watches - all bar two all older than me - will outlive me. And still be fit for purpose. They won't contribute to the growing mountain of electronic waste either. Save the environment, buy vintage mechanical watches!

I love my Apple Watch, my series 2 Hermes edition is still being worn virtually every day.

Ok, here is my neighbour's totally fake Rolex!! Chipped gold paint, missing gold paint and gold paint that's gone on the stainless steel. Also, the magnifier thingy for the date looks slightly to the left to me. I've also run my thumb and fingers over the watch. It was like running them over a pumice stone! No smooth rounded edges whatsoever!! She hasn't received a reply yet and I doubt she ever will! I hope the scum bags who've ripped her off and no doubt many others, somehow get their comeuppance! Why that dodgy site hasn't been taken down by law I do not know!! She even mentioned getting a 'posse' together to pay them a visit, but that could lead to worse things than being ripped off for 237 quid!

Oh, and the 'glow in the dark' digits don't glow in the dark at all! No surprises there!

She also told me that she was tempted to go for their buy 2 get 1 free offer, which would've meant forking out £798 quid!! I consoled her, telling her in a way she's got off lightly!

Errr...what ?

I think an assumption is being made that we've all bought fake stuff at some point or other, knowing that it's a fake.

Will admit I have, and yes, it was a watch. But I was a schoolgirl, my 11+ Swatch had just been nicked* and I bought a fake Gucci off the market simply because it was purple and green, and it was a combination of the colours the TWR Jaguars were running - purple for the Silk Cut Group C cars, and green for the Castrol IMSA ones.

That watch lasted me up until I went to uni.

* My much wealthier classmates didn't need an ugly black & dark green plastic watch - they were wearing Tissot rock watches FFS - but I guess I was the Luna Lovegood of my year...

I was commenting on the desire of the the woman for some sort of compensation when she knowingly bought counterfeit (and hence illegal) goods.
