A week without a helmet.

Why do you want us fervently to follow your thinking?

I couldn't give a rat's furry backside if you want to follow my thinking or not. Helmet wearing (or not) is my only real bug bear amongst cycling groups. I had one guy, in a group of relative newbies I was out riding with last week, who thought my full head, carbon Kevlar lid, was just hysterical. He realised the error of his ways, when I showed him the picture of the X-Ray of my shattered skull, from about 10 years ago, when a truck mirror sparked me out, and I went over a central reservation barrier onto Tarmac without a lid. All of the medical bods were of the opinion, that the injurys would have been far less severe if I had been wearing a decent lid (even one of those mushroom head silly bits of crap lid's would have helped). But hey, there's no law governing cycling lids, so that's that.

I've got it on my rubbish phone, which I take to get my routes recorded, whilst out riding. I put it on there precisely for the reason I showed the guy last week. It has had an effect, he was wearing a lid last time I saw him out on his bike.

It seems a common link between compulsionists to want to dictate to others after similar events; maybe we could dub this The Cracknell Effect.
I for get about these modern all singing al dancing phones that give access to all manner of stuff, it seems to be just like having a computer with you at all times - I was thinking more on the lines of a tradition photograph that you kept in your back pocket which would be a little odd.

It must have been a stupidly close pass to hit you with its near side mirror!
It was a concrete mixer truck, I spotted him approaching, and made the mistake of moving left, he thought he had more room than he did, and whack, game over. It was just a good job nothing was following him. Anyway, lesson learnt.

Those of you that know me [and my better half], will know from riding with us that we do not wear helmets, for many reasons that I am not going into here. @Racing roadkill, what a lovely name you chose to go under, have you ever cycled on the continent? Give it a try, though I suspect you would be appalled at all the children cycling to school unsupervised and without helmets. This behaviour has been going on for longer than you have been cycling, think how large your audience would be if you went over there and explained how much danger they are putting themselves in every day. Would they listen to you? No, and you must then ask yourself why, seriously. It is almost as if they know something you do not, yet how can this be? A whole nation [The Netherlands] having opposing views to yours, hardly seems credible.
After saying all that i am now about to search for some protective cycling head gear. because my birthday is coming up and a new cap is needed to protect my eyes from idiot full beam drivers.
Well done @Jon George, someone using their head for once.

Cheers - appreciated. (There have been times over the last few days where I feel as though I've fallen down some rabbit-hole that involves the pub wind-up merchant, but without the chance to walk away and grab a beer.)

But clearly you do otherwise you wouldn't be here evangelising like a compulsion zealot .... you think everybody in the UK who wants to ride a bike should do as you do based on your experience regardless of substantiated evidence.

Inspired....

I should start posting pictures of childern's skull fractures when they were notwearing a Thudguard:

Or perhaps images of adult skull fractures sustained whilst a pedestrian, in a car, climbing stairs..... I have access to a lot of iamges

Which is obviously unequivocal proof of the efficiency of helmets in all ofthese cases

Well if you insist on comparing apples with lemons (British roads ain't the same as continental roads, both in concentration / types of traffic, provision of proper cycle facilities, driver attitudes, etc.etc.etc.) to try and 'win' an unwinable argument then you just carry on. I frequently cycle big miles on the continent, it's like a different world for a cyclist over there. However if you choose to ride without a lid, that's your choice and if / when you or yours have a big off, then that's your problem. The beauty of this is, if you have a big to do, and end up in a bad way / dead, where a lid would have helped, you won't be able to post about it, because corpses can't type.
