This is one of the few times that a helmet thread has been useful to me (or anyone else, I suspect); I'm a sometimes lid wearer, whilst I never wear one touring or going to the shops etc. I almost always do when going on a 'proper' ride or club run. This discussion has made me question why I'm happy to hurtle down an alpine descent with only a cloth cap on the old noggin but wear a helmet at other times.
I've read a fair bit on the subject but It was racing roadkill's posts that settled the matter for me. I now intend to dispense with a cycle helmet for the majority of the time. I can't chuck it in the bin as I'm contractually required to wear one whilst delivering cycle training with the Bikeability scheme I currently work for, but apart from that a cap will be my head covering of choice from now on.
I shall now be perusing the interweb for some stylish, medium weight, peaked head wear for the winter.
Out of casual curiosity, exactly how does wishing someone dead in a nasty accident fit in with the CC tag line: "a fun and friendly online cycling community"?
To be honest there's a large cadre of abusive bucketmouthed internet tough guys who do the "fun and friendly" tag line no justice. I just block the lot of em.
True, I'm up to seventeen ignores. This thread has identified the one's I don't wish to converse with, like no other. 17 out of all the folk who use this site is pretty low in percentage terms, but it just goes to show you, that you have to keep it in perspective. A shouty minority, can give a false impression if you're not careful.
Before this thread started I was against helmet compulsion. But now having experienced at first hand the aggression of the anti helmet lobby my views have changed. In fact I am now going to write to my MSPs and MP stating my support for compulsion and requesting that Holyrood and Westminster vote on it as a priority. I'll ask them to ban flashing front lights too.
How pleasant ....I'm glad I've made you decide to join the Darwin club.
Where is the ant-helmet lobby?
There is an anti unsubstantiated emotive tripe lobby
There is also an anti melon lobby
But you will have to give examples where anyone here has been anti-helmet
There is no anti helmet lobby.I would say more a Mafia than an Anti helmet lobby , they do have more to lose though !
Compulsion would be a bad thing imo .
Maybe not this thread but User posts anti helmet stuff without much to back it up and have you not did the same ( snag points ,etc)?!
Countering the bizarre and untrue claims of helmet performance by some of the compulsion lobby with evidenced facts is not anti helmet.
It is offering a reality check that allows people to make an informed choice
Of course if you are an evangelical compulsionist then merely stating that helmet design does have limitations and choice of any form (never mind an informed one) are both unacceptable, and far easier to dismiss as anti-helmet rather than discuss the points raised
