But if parking were enforced ruthlessly NOW then so many more roads would be appropriate for the lawful use they get without having to spend a single penny.

There is no legal or moral justification for a driver to inconvenience or endagenger others in order to simply avoid minor inconvenience to themselves.

The problem is one of the behaviour of the self entitled and lawless, not of the roads and footways which they decide to treat as car parks.

If a road ain't up to the job of being used as a car park, then dont use at as a car park.

In many cases the answer is to design, or modify the design, or roads so they are appropriate for the use they get

THEN enforce the parking - and do it properly and not every now and again so that people realise that parking wrongly will almost certainly get you a fine.

Of course this requires money

For example - the road I mentioned about could be widened and sorted out with parking down one side by taking a few feet off the delelist golf course on the South and moving the fence a bit. On teh other side it could be widened by taking away the grass verge and moving the footpath a bit thus taking a few feet off the park ( which is plenty wide enough.

but these solutions take money - so they won't - and TBH I would rsther they spend it on more important things

To raise the money just 100% enforce the regulations until there's enough money, although by then the illegal parking might have stopped so there's no need for expansion, winner winner. 😂

This would trigger an avalanche of complaints about anti-motorist local/central government and people taking back handers from the enforcement company to allow them to fleece the poor hard-done-by motorist

without, of course, mentioning at any point that the forthcoming enforcement was well publicised and all the drivers needed to do was park properly!
and also ignoring the avalanche that happened previously about people parking and obstructing prams, pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters

Still - that's local government for you!

As for the plod knocking on a 70 odd year old women's door at midnight, asking if the parked up car in the cemetery was her's, also saying they are concerned that they've spotted a man walking round the cemetery in the dark and they thought the car could be his WTF!!!! I thought they were short on staff and sometimes unable to solve a crime due to this, another WTF!!!! According to my cemetery friend the copper seemed shocked that a bloke was walking round the cemetery late at night.

Rembering that Drivers are simply a subset of the population, I think that should read:

There is no legal or moral justification for a person to inconvenience or endagenger others in order to simply avoid minor inconvenience to themselves.

Absolutely Mr Lad, absolutely. However, drivers are the only ones parking cars

Still and all, the world would be a nicer place if everyone followed your words.

No cars blocking paths in the cemetery this evening, I'm happy to report! Maybe someone's had a quiet word with those who seem to think the cemetery is an extension of the house they're renting. 🧐

My cemetery friend said (she's just sent me a text) she's not over optimistic about these new tenants, saying she thinks it could be the calm before the storm. I replied that we should give it time. If they do start trying to stop cars driving carefully in the cemetery or just parking up near the entrance, we'll go through the official channels and get the authorities to sort them out! There's little point in confronting such types, even if you try the nice approach. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt at the moment, thinking they're more thick (they think they're renting the whole cemetery, not just the house and the little bit of land adjoining it:rolleyes:) than actually evil. Brains over brawn will win the day in the end and normality will be restored, even though it might take a while to achieve! 🧐
