Of course the issue is it is all terraces with no off road parking.
Yes that's it, so @Drago s idea is that if you can't prove off-road parking then you shouldn't be allowed a car. Is this not discriminating against those who don't have a driveway? Wouldn't this be a huge kick in the teeth for social mobiilty? If all those people had to give up their car, I know for a fact in my city the public transport system (buses only) wouldn't be able to take it.

Selfishly I have a driveway, so I'm alright Jack. But I'm trying to think of others who might not be so lucky. it's not always just a case of parking further up the road so you're not on a pavement. For lots of people it will mean literally parking miles away

What I'm saying is, it's better to half park on pavement providing there's ample room for a mobility scooter or a double child buggy, that way it would also leave room for an emergency vehicle to pass on the road.
It's never better to half park on a pavement. If you can't park entirely on the bit of road of your choice, you should go and find the bit of road that is your second choice.

Good point, but I can't see people giving up their own vehicles for the common good... humans are selfish and don't like sharing.
I agree. They will give them up because they are an expensive luxury that they no longer need. Small numbers at first... The youngsters will start to use them and not bother with driving lessons. Gradually you will see change.

As for @Phaeton's cynicism, Renault estimate 2025 for full driverless. Most of the ICE companies expect to be matching Tesla with self-driving on the highway in 2021. Hyundair reckon 2030 for full urban self driving, BMW early 2020s. Tesla are aiming for full self driving by the end of this year. They are 8 years ahead of ICE companies for electric car development and 4 years ahead for self-driving development. Elon Musk notoriously over-estimates deadlines, but I'd bet on full driverless cars starting to become a common sight by 2025.

We are not going to see wide adoption of self driving cars inside 20 years, if we do I'll show my knob in Burton's window

Do these self driving cars come with a cleaning robot?

(Just thinking of one of the problems that our current taxi drivers have xx()

No one is suggesting that everyone should give up their cars, just use them a bit less.
As usage declined, public transport usage would gradually increase and with increasing revenue the services could be improved. Government could subsidise public transport instead of private transport and the public services could improve beyond recognition.

And while they're using them less, they're going to be parked for longer periods. The places where people can park fully on the road will have to accomodate 50% more parked cars. It will create more congestion. More main routes will become 1 - 1.5 lanes wide instead of 2.

I agree that you need time for people's attitudes to car ownership change, but a ban would not come into effect slowly, it would be sudden. As I said, I support a ban, but I predict great chaos for other people if a ban comes in.

I think this is known as a grand slam isn't it?

School run Mum in an ostentatious w@nkpanzer? Check!
Right next to a primary school? Check!
Parked on a junction so other motorists can't see past? Check!
Parked on the pavement? Check!

Is that also some tactile paving for the visually impaired possibly under the front nearside wheel?
