I have been educated and enlightened, and have changed my mind, multiple times through reading the political discussions on CycleChat. That's why I read them - because I think that improving my understanding of the world and developing my understanding of how we could improve the world is a Good Thing, not to mention a continuous process that I hope still to be doing till my dying day.

If by "it won't change a thing" you, or anyone else, include not changing your own mind, I would think that a really sad place to be.
I've enjoyed, been amused and been saddened by comments made on CC. However, I've seen many people speak from a centrist perhaps even right leaning points on here only for them to be piled on, ridiculed, mocked and silenced as a result. Happens all the time. It seems one way traffic. Its a shame because if the NACA forums were more inclusive I think we'd have a better, farther reaching and more mature discussions on important topics.... To be fair CC is not the problem but our wider society is. Its an increasing polarised and challenging world to debate any topics on. Outside the forum people will often debate over each other, shout louder and gesture perfusely, in the end achieving nothing, this is basically politics. It is my experience that people are less likely to accept differing opinions or even engage meaningfully especially when the environment in which they are debating is hostile. This is unfortunately how it is often on CC also. Admittedly some topics have personal meaning and may draw up some personal emotions but I still feel its important to try hard to refrain from including this in debates as again this makes it more likely to end up in a negative atmosphere for debate. Challenging opinions is healthy, challenging people for their opinions personally is not.
