Obviously an Aubergine
I have been educated and enlightened, and have changed my mind, multiple times through reading the political discussions on CycleChat. That's why I read them - because I think that improving my understanding of the world and developing my understanding of how we could improve the world is a Good Thing, not to mention a continuous process that I hope still to be doing till my dying day.

If by "it won't change a thing" you, or anyone else, include not changing your own mind, I would think that a really sad place to be.
I find it quite bizarre that you allow yourself to be influenced by a group of anonymous strangers on the internet; but each to their own.
Same here, some of the stuff I read on here just re-enforces my opinions that it's me that's 'got it right '.

Being outright rude or offensive to people is obviously wrong but Just because I think some of the latest jokes going round are funny doesn't make me a racist or a woman disrespector, or does it?

I genuinely think other people are the same but afraid to admit it in public.

Classic, 'learning' versus 'fixed' mindset.

It's called discovering new ideas, fresh perspective, other peoples experiences, and points of view.

And learning from that.

Journalists, writers, broadcasters, telly pundits, are just 'strangers'.

Why be here if you don't want to hear from 'strangers'

I can't personally imagine having such little curiosity, about other people, and flexibility of mind, only wanting to have your own viewpoint heard and validated, but there we are.

That in itself is an interesting thing to discover, and assimilate, about people I guess.

Possibly, yes, depending on the content and context.

Several Italian families were involved in what we could call seaside catering in Sunderland, including ice cream.

It's thought they first came here as prisoners of war.

Many of the ones who stayed were from a small town in Italy, some later returning to settle back there as the ice cream businesses declined, although a couple of families remain to this day.

Sunderland visitors to the Italian town are surprised to find the locals know a lot about the North East coast, and some speak with mackem accents.
yep a lot of that two way stuff has gone on - Italy has gone through several waves of exporting people.
Barga in northern Italy has a lot of links with Scotland and so in a spirit of cultural exchange (or appropriation as the prudes call it) has an annual fish and chip festa. There's a small town/villlage in Sardinia that exported a lot of folk to somewhere I seem to remember is in the north east (UK) - maybe Middlesborough - and so folks created family ties. I've been there and sat in the square for a while but must admit I didn't notice any north eastern twangs or habits.
Then there's all the glasgow Italians.
And the welsh ones - I once shared a train compartment from Milan to Paris or Calais with an extended Welsh Italian family - not sure that interbreeding should be allowed - talked non-stop - I barely got a minute's sleep.

Classic mudsticks interpretation. Who says I don't want to learn? I learn every day. From friends, relatives, workmates..... But not from, as I said, random strangers on the internet. If you seriously think that your ramblings on this forum are going to have any influence over me, then you are deluded. Learn from that what you like.

No, I didn't think you were going to be influenced by anything I'd say, not for one moment..

But I've learnt some stuff from your 'ramblings' so that's useful for me  .

Brandane! This is NOT criticism, nor a personal attack on you, I’m trying to understand your thinking.

On the one hand you say ’random strangers’ on CC will not be able to influence you in the slightest way possible and are deluded if they think they can, but on the other hand, you are more than happy to discuss, with said ’random strangers’ your personal love-life and your emotional highs, highers and lows.

BTW I’m not up to date with your present romantic status, but I hope and wish the best for you.

I have broadened my learnings so much by 'random people on the internet'. In fact, my whole career is based on it. If I only learnt from people face to face I would have existed in a pretty small bubble, much of it echoing itself. I may not agree with everything random on the internet, but I certainly learn from large parts of it.

Me too,

If I only wanted to hear from 'people like me' I definitely wouldn't be here.

There's a difference between sharing stories and personal experiences on the internet, and trying to influence and educate others - as I believe has been the aim of certain posters on recent sensitive threads.

Except that I don't think that is what I said!
I am at odds with swansonj's point of view that they can be "educated, enlightened, and have their mind changed multiple times" by reading posts on CC..
If I am at odds with someone's POV on here, nothing they say is going to change that. If, however, I am in broad agreement with a poster but a slightly differing POV, then I might take on board some learning, e.g. an alternative route to take on a ride.
But to say that CC can educate, enlighten, and change their mind; WTF...? Apart from a small number of CC members I have met in person, I have absolutely no idea who I am supposed to be learning from... Mudsticks could be a North Korean secret agent with a mission to undermine British democracy for all I know...
