Never saw you on there Bob, but as @Breedon passed me about 500 metres into the climb I think you must have been well ahead of me.

I started the Alpe in position 304, and finished about 400 so well chuffed. Little fatty like me beating 450 others up a mountain

And when you remember that a fair few will be on zpower and or weight doping then you have even more reason to be a happy little fatty  Now if all those people putting out 4w/kg after best part of an hour raced in Cat A ...

Well that went well! Forgot to turn off and on again at the start so quickly realised and whizzed off the front of the group at the start, switched on and off and managed to rejoin the group.

There's no doubt the Bkool runs out of resistance on the steeper sections - it's still hard work of course, and I was trying really hard (I even started to cramp up on the way down), but there's not the same resistance for your legs as there would be with a higher end direct drive trainer - so I look forward to being brought back don to earth with a big bump when I do the course on Carlo's Neo!

Paul, great ride. I am not sure you will be that much slower on the NEO. Your HR speaks for the effort you put in. When you do try the Alp on Monte’s NEO can you and Lee race and the rest of us watch? In fact I would be happy to join in obviously with others closer to my pace!

i think i just pressed the like button by mistake !
willing to have a go but all of us in it - why should i be the only one to suffer
fwiw in my opinion i dont think there is much difference between neo and pro on a constant up hill gradient ( for a lightweight anyway )
its when the angle changes all the time that the pro mucks up
constant grades i think the pro sorts its self out plus you have to cope with the back wheel spinning out whenever you stand up
i'm under no illusion and know that bridgy is much stronger than me and watching him grind up alpe - at one point hr was 178 rpm 41 wkg nearly 6 ,hammered it home to me
but more than willing to try nipping at his heels

Slept like a dog last night, beaten up to put it mildly:B)

I pootled with Bob until he left me in the road to ruins section. It's amazing how much speed and time is lost if you drop from a big pack. Dean must of been behind me but obviously came passed on the Alp. I'm quite looking for the next one only because it's shorter and flatter, but I need to recover first

Agreed re Pro-there is an advantage but nowhere near the advantage on the flats/rolling courses where momentum seems an issue.
Fact is Paul is the strongest cyclechat rider.

Talking about me now:smile: I had a threshold HR and power improvement notification over last 3 months and now just under 30w down on new year best and 2kilos heavier. But max HR 10bpm below best. Confusing.
I am up for a race up the Alp.

Knee? If so hope it heals quickly for you.

has anything been done on the knee front yet mate?

I’m officially in the hands of the professionals... they have their theories. Boring stuff.... I’m getting referred for a scan etc.

But from a cycling perspective I feel like pushing myself to and beyond my ftp potential, seems like much further than my knees potential, if that make sense. My knee is the weakest link basically.

So I’ve drawn the conclusion that if I’m going to continue cycling in the short term I’ve got to focus on endurance and conditioning for that, rather than pushing too much through the pedals at any one point. So racing’s prob best left off the table. And my goals have been downgraded somewhat, to just surviving the Pyrenees rather than conquering them!

FWIW I play it by ear(knee?) with mine. So, last week not so good and lots of spinning and bailing when discomfort or pain too much. This week good so worth a race. I know we are all different but it may be a similar regime may work for you.

Tommy I don't know if you use a cadence sensor and the typical cadence you cycle at. I found a couple of years ago my cadence was down around 70 rpm, This gave me more power, but at the expense is sore knees once in a while. I then spent a winter learning to spin 90-95rpm . I lost a little power as it pushes your heart rate higher, but it relieves knee soreness, due to less mechanical stress in the joint. I now when touring spin and save the low cadence stuff for the odd power events. Hopefully yours is as simple as that . Andy

Time to consider gearing down so you can spin up a mountain. I got funny looks the first time I did a club run with MTB groupset. No one laughs now when I can spin up 25% inclines.

Bikecalc will help with gearing selection. 11-34 road Cass and 33/32 inner rings can be sourced. if MTB too radical
