Oh dear, I'm so sorry that it scuppered your race, guys. A real shame that Michael had tactically dropped off at the foot of the Volcano.
With a four-point lead over Hexagone, we only had to finish in the top 5 and we'd beat them even if they won the TTT. It soon became clear that, with only four riders, they wouldn't match our time, and I think that might have motivated us to push a bit too hard at the start; we were first at the first timecheck. We 'blobbed up' shortly before the Volcano as a way of staying intact with one another going up, rather than absolutely hammering it. We were about 70s slower than my PB for the Volcano ascent but it meant that we didn't fragment, and I'm sure it benefitted us for the final 16km. ZSUN, who'd started third, caught and passed Hexagone, so we could see that they were recouping their deficit to us, and in the end they were just a bit too strong. F14 Chopgun, who only had five riders, put in a great ride to take the win on the night, putting almost exactly a minute into us (half of which was gained on the Volcano).
