Just looking back at the end of the race @Norry1 and you must have been painfully close to hanging on to the front over the last Legsnapper as it looks like you were right behind me as we crested it? It can be fine margins because I only just got back on myself

Just watched my video. And yes, I was 1 or 2 places behind you at the top of the 3rd Legsnapper, but didn't have much less to catch/stay with you. I did my fastest Legsnapper that 3rd time of 50 secs and 469W. I should have immediately deployed my aero helmet, but didn't.

Hard race that - and unsurprisingly had my highest VI of any race here (14%) with an average power of 236W but NP of 269W.

The crest of the leg snapper is critical.

I was a couple of seconds behind the last rider of the pack. I didn't have much to push around the corner, in a few metres the rider was already 7 seconds ahead.

Dropped!

Yeah I've seen your vid too now and I noticed that about your aero PU and thought maybe if you'd deployed it straight away on the descent it might have made the difference - didn't really want to say it and rub salt in the would though (but as you've said it yourself now, I will )

One thing I really noticed in this race was how the new pack dynamics really do make a positive difference when you're in a small group chasing back on to a bigger pack, as happened to both of us at some points. In the past, the slightest gap to a group of 30+ riders like that and it would have been curtains almost however hard you pushed because big groups of riders used to carry so much more speed automatically (even if no one was actively pulling hard on the front).

Now, you do at least have a chance to close a gap if you (or someone in your small group who you can follow!) put some effort in. Same in terms of staying off the front of a larger group once you have a gap - not that I've done that for a while! Much better, and more realistic though

I think last night's race having watched a few videos what power up you got can make a difference, I got a lot of feathers so really only one place to deploy it and as a lighter rider not the most beneficial ,I would have liked an aero to deploy over the crest as this is more advantageous to me ,and the ghost was useless unless I wanted to scare Andy 👻 BOO

Yeah I got two ghosts in a row at one point which was rather frustrating but I'm sure I'm not alone in that! Looking at my times up the legsnapper over the two recent races I've done, the feather definitely gives you a couple of seconds advantage which can be very useful ifyou are fighting to stay on the front group

I got an aero at the start of the last lap so I didn't deploy it on the Legsnapper and had to really dig in to stay with those who had feathers. It all came together afterwards (my power dropped as low as 113W at the crest of the second lump), then stretched out on the north bank, and I idiotically used my aero and burnt my physiological matches chasing a group of Frenchmen who'd jumped clear with 2km to go...

Feather is my favourite by far for Innsbruckring. Decrease your weight by 10% for 30s. Effectively the same as increase your W/kg by 10%.
Smashy smashy up the Snapper. :wahhey:

I asked the guys in my Club WhatsApp Group to recommend a local segment that was like the Legsnapper (and hence the race segment I mentioned yesterday). They came up with a cracker and I gave it a go today. I did my 3rd best 1 minute power of all time (16W off my best) of 595W. I wish I could deliver that power indoors, I'd have stayed with the lead group yesterday

I've read this before that many people can't match their real world watts on an indoor trainer (I don't have a PM on my road bike so I have no idea if that applies to me).

But just out of interest, what is it in your case do you think that stops you matching your real world watts on Zwift? Is it an equipment setup thing, the way you ride your bike on the road, or something else do you think?

When I was a bit fitter and did the odd TT I my watts outside (on a TT) would line up with my indoor TT watts.

On outdoor ‘free rides’ it was leads different. Outdoor with the longer times spent riding, coffee stops and LOTS of freewheeling meant they didn’t match. Uphill watts were fairly consistent though from what I can remember.

Same power meter? You must be really pleased with how you have bounced back from the hip operation- amazing really.

I don't really know but it is pretty consistent. My FTP is usually around 20W lower indoors. Accepted wisdom is that it relates to cooling - but I have 2 decent fans on me indoors. I think it is something to do with the difference in inertia and at the top end, the way outdoors I can manhandle the bike around at sprint type power.

I have 2 sets of Powertap pedals which I use interchangeably - I've hit indoor and outdoor peaks on both sets.

... and yes I am pleased with my recovery although I was beginning to think I'd never hit my 2021 highs again - but I'm getting closer and yesterday gave me more encouragement in that regard.

For sprint power (for me) I think it's bike rocking. Going for an outdoor Strava segment I use my arms quite a lot.
According to an article I read on TrainerRoad site a while back, the main reason most people generally have lower indoor power is heat. I certainly noticed indoor performance improvements each time I added a new fan (currently 3 but not room for more  )
