Note to self; climbing portal should be done before a weigh in, not after.

Cadence when at 100% difficulty is very different to race cadence.

I've been doing the climbs at 100% to get the legs used to working harder ... definitely makes climbing a challenge when climbing is not your thing lol Really enjoying these though, great addition to Zwift. And much prefer the simple graphics rather than fake trees ,,, plus the colour segments tells me when a rest point and easier gradient is coming along

Totally agree. I really like it the way it is- I prefer climbing this than the rendered ventoux climb and it actually feels more natural as I climb the way I do in real life - badly, with terrible form, but also putting in the efforts for the steep parts and recovering on the shallower bits, and the colour coding helps visualise that well.

The way I do climbs on Zwift is very much similar to outdoor. I stay seated and try to keep a high cadence, I do stand but only to stretch out. I use around 30% difficulty setting, but all it does make my gearing similar to my road bike. I use the stages bike for training for its 'Dream' 50 ratios setup, allows me fine tune my cadence by 1-2 rpm.

I like it too. It's fine for what it is and a great reminder to us all that this is a video game.
Looking at all the whinging in FB and the Zwift forums, it's astonishing to me how so many people seem outraged by it. (Not the fact that they have to climb, which IS outrageous - I'll agree - but the graphics. )

It's clearly just a tool they've used to build routes from GPS data fairly quickly, which is deffo a step in the right direction.

If folk don't like it, do use it. I suspect that the overall positive comments on here indicates its very popular addition.

I unsubbed from Zwift back in April so I’ve only got the free 25km per month and so have only done two of the shorter portal climbs so far.

I can’t see myself using the portal on a regular basis, but that’s not because of the graphics, more because climbing isn’t my thing. I’ll probably eventually do all of them once just to say I have (especially if there’s a badge on offer) but chances are there won’t be any desire to repeat, especially the longer ones.

The only complaint I have is that the colours of the gradients are too limited - would have liked a more gradual change through yellow/orange/red as it gets steeper and then maybe use green for the false flats and blue for downhill only (right now it goes blue at +2% and stays the same even if it’s -6%).

I've got to go again probably 4 or 5 times more by the end of the month to get level 42. (End of month because after that Trebiac might not be freely available in the rotation ).

After that, all bets are off as it doesn't look like smashing through the levels generates anything particularly useful to racing above 42 (I can manage without Fire Socks for now 😁)

The Tourmalet is around 1hr40 at Z2 pace for me Steve. So if you fancy a bit of endurance on a wet winters day.
