If anyone is looking for a good location for your next cycling holiday, it is well worth considering Calpe. Until last year I’d never heard of it but it is used by many of the World Tour teams for their pre and post season training and is a bit of a mecca for cyclists but without being as packed (with bikes) as places like Mallorca. It is about 40 miles north of Alicante and 65 miles south of Valencia.
I went with 3 other guys and we stayed in the Suitopia Hotel which coincidentally was the same hotel I stayed in for my ill-fated trip last year.
My targets for the week were to ride 20 hours, do 1,000 TSS and beat my time up the marque climb in the area – the Coll de Rates. Roy also wanted me to do a 90 second max effort to fill a gap on my power curve.
The weather was perfect, being sunny 90% of the time and between 20-23 degrees most of the day. It felt warmer due to the bright sun – and my cycling tan lines are now firmly re-established.
We were fairly evenly matched as riders which helped and the riding was great.
I finished with 21 hours cycling, a TSS of 1,195 and 323 miles on the clock .... oh and 21,000ft+ climbing.
On the Coll de Rates I managed a 22:09 which took 3:46 off last year’s time which I was pretty pleased with.
I had a bash at the 90 second max effort and did raise my power to 414W but this was when I was pretty fatigued at the end of the week. I “accidentally” set a new post-op 1 minute power of 514W during an aborted earlier attempt at the 90 second target.
So overall it was a great week. Great roads and cycling. Perfect weather; great hotel and food; great craick with the guys and an excellent “training” block.
I’ll post a few pics later.
